EUGÈNE CHAPERON (Paris, 1857-Paris, 1938) "Assault by Murat at the head of his battalion". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Slight lack of polychromy on the frame.

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

EUGÈNE CHAPERON (Paris, 1857-Paris, 1938) "Assault by Murat at the head of his battalion". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. It presents lack of polychromy in the frame. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 102 x 89 cm (frame). War themes, especially episodes of Napoleonic battles, were among Eugene Chaperon's favourites. In this composition, Joaquin Murat brandishes his sword and encourages his men to gallop towards the enemy. His foreshortened horse and the character's fearlessness attest to the painter's skill in depicting heroic scenes on the battlefield. The heads of the Napoleonic soldiers emerge from the misty background and follow the hero. Murat was Bonaparte's aide-de-camp for the Italian campaign of 1796-1797. He then took part in the Egyptian Campaign, after which he participated in the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire in the year VIII of the French Revolution. Eugène Chaperon was a French painter, draughtsman and illustrator. He was a pupil of Isidore Pils and Jean Baptiste Édouard Detaille. He specialised in military scenes and battles. His most famous work, A l'aube (At Dawn, 1880), recreates the dawn on the battlefield of Patay. Other works of his depict everyday scenes of military life, such as La douche au régiment (Shower in the Regiment, 1887) or Le photographe au régiment (The Photographer in the Regiment, 1899). These are relaxed scenes of fraternisation between soldiers and officers, very much in keeping with the ideas of social Catholicism and the politicians of the French Third Republic.

EUGENE CHAPERON (1857-1938).
