Chang Lei, Digital Print “Animal Farm”, China, 2010

      Est: €1,300 - €1,690

C- print China, 2010 Chang Lei (born. 1972), Chinese rock musician and artist One of eight editions Overall dimensions 113 x 50 cm Very good condition This exceptional digital print by the contemporary Chinese artist Chang Lei shows the Tiananmen square with the Gate of Heavenly Piece in the background, the main entrance to the Forbidden City. There is a crowd of people gathered at the mural crown of the gate and in front of it the artist placed every pair of animals, imaginable on the square. At first glance, the whole scene appears like a modern interpretation of Noah’s ark. However, at closer inspection, one realizes that the gates of the Forbidden City are firmly shut and that there is a lonely human figure amongst all the animals. In obvious despair, the naked, neither male nor female person clings his arms around his head. The Tiananmen square is of great historical and political importance in China, especially since the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 where the student-led protests were brutally suppressed by the Chinese military. This scene might be a statement of the artist about the blindness of humans created by propaganda and dictatorship against the background of political and social chaos. The digital print is in a very good condition; its overall dimensions are 113 x 50 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
