NAIVE NEW ENGLAND PORTRAIT & (2) FAMILY FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH & DRAWING - Waist Length Portrait of a Prosperous Gentleman, oil on canvas, unsigned, circa 1845, probably by an itinerant painter, possibly Joseph Goodhue Chandler (NY/MA, 1813-1884), along with two framed portraits: a charcoal drawing of the same man in his fifties or sixties, and a tintype of his daughter, marked verso "Emma Lovering". The painting is unframed, 25" x 30", the drawing and photo are in similar oval walnut fames, 13" x 10 1/2" & 11" x 9 1/4". The painting has been restored. This was found in Massachusetts, and is most probably a portrait of Rufus Agustus (sic) Lovering (1804-1890) and his daughter Emma (1832 - ?), of Woburn, Mass. His farm was on Cambridge Road, he was part owner of the Blueberry Mountain Quarry in the Winchester Highlands. That may be what is represented outside the open window in the painting.

Young Girl Holding a Cluster of Grapes with Her Dog at Her Feet Probably Massachusetts, circa 1837-1845 Oil on canvas 38 7/8 x 26 ¾ inches A description of the painting's history prior to being sold at James D. Julia Auctions appeared in the October 1990 issue of the "Maine Antiques Digest". After the death of Mrs. Leila Banks, the painting was to be sold by F.O. Bailey Co. in June 1976. The night before the auction it was stolen, only to be discovered two years later in a Parke-Bernet sale catalogue by the editor of "Maine Antiques Digest", Sam Pennington. Minor paint loss below the dog helped to irrefutably identify the painting and return it to its rightful owners. Provenance: Old Hope Antiques, 1990 (purchased at Julia Auction) Please note: Accompanied by a conservation report from Fred Koszewnik, Marlton, New Jersey, December 17, 1990. Estimate: $12,000 - $18,000 It is an honor and pleasure for Keno Auctions to offer for sale the Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Isbell.
