Howard Chandler Christy I Want You for the Navy 1917 41.625 h x 26.875 w in (106 x 68 cm) This sultry Christy girl was created at precisely the same time as Flagg's Uncle Sam, and both are saying "I Want You"—but with ever-so-slightly different inflections. Not only is this an interesting comparison to Christy's "Gee!! I Wish I Were a Man" (see PAI-XC, 75), but the sheer sexiness with which she dons the sailor's dress uniform anticipates the Van Heusen shirt campaigns of many years later. A beautiful wears a victory wreath on her head, as the American flag unfurls behind her in this patriotic American WWI poster. She represents America, clearing the path across the ocean for the seamen below to launch their rocket against the enemy. America's involvement in WWI was largely unanticipated, and quite expensive. The U.S. Government began soliciting bonds that everyday Americans could deposit to the cause, to be paid back by the government when the war ended with interest applied. This influx of cash flow allowed the US to buy tanks, feed soldiers, and essentially finance the path to victory. Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952) was one of the most important American illustrators of the early 1900s. He began his career as a battlefield artist, depicting skirmishes in the Spanish American War for publications such as Colliers, Scribner's, and Harper's. From there, he continued to illustrate for these magazines using his famous "Christy Girl" character, a beautiful, confident, and witty woman meant to represent the new American ideal. Christy became a household name through this character. During WWI, he returned to battle depictions as well as poster design. Following the War, Christy became very successful as a portrait artist, taking commissions from Teddy Roosevelt to Amelia Earhart. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. It has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.
