        Eric Chan (b. 1975) Pomegranate, 2006

        Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

The work of Eric Chan captures fleeting moments in time, through the subject of still life. Viewed from a vantage point, the painting features a group of pomegranates executed in deep, red colours. The interplay of dramatic light and dark tones were created through soft blends of colours. A pomegranate was split into half, revealing the juicy, glistening seeded fruit. Eric Chan graduated with a MFA at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000 after his BFA and studies at the Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore in 1996. He won the Juror's Choice award in the Asean Art Awards in 2002, and a Highly Commended mention in the UOB Painting of the Year 2003. He inaugurated the BMW corporate art series with the Singapore Tyler Print Institute in 2007. His auction record was set in The Edge 2013 auction for a work, Ingres, which sold for a premium of RM33,000, while another work, It's There, It's Still There, sold at the Henry Butcher November 2013 auction for a premium of RM25,300. His solos include in-Definite Defiance, Chan Hampe Galleries, Singapore (2016), Flaunting (2000), Out-Sight (Hong Kong, 2002), Balik Kampung (Kuala Lumpur, 2012), Nightfalls (2006), Another Place Another Time (2007), Fine Displacement (Hong Kong, 2008), The Romantics Of Betrayal (2010), Wanted: Possession And Rejection (2011).

        Est: RM18,000 - RM30,000

Executed on a grand scale, and painted with a nuanced monochromatic palette, Eric Chan renders a figure looking out at paper boats, reminiscent of a film still. This work is from the Wanted: Possession And Rejection Series created in 2011. The works from this series are based on the artist's observations on issues of open-ness, freedom, resilience and tenacity, with compositions informed by photographic, video-graphic and filmic aesthetics. Eric Chan graduated with a MFA at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000 after his BFA and studies at the Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore in 1996. ERIC CHAN (b. 1977) UNTITLED, 2002, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

Singapore-based Eric Chan questions the sanctity of images in his monochromatic and minimalist paintings reminiscent somewhat of Gerhard Richter, pushing the boundaries between Photography and Painting. In this, with all the emotional nuances of ambiguity in his diffused imagery, he tries to find a connection with the poetry of timelessness and the Tao of absence. Eric Chan graduated with a MFA at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000 after his BFA and studies at the Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore in 1996. He won the Juror’s Choice award in the Asean Art Awards in 2002, and a Highly Commended mention in the UOB Painting of the Year 2003. In Nightfalls, there were 12 large-scale paintings in pink, aubergine, aqua, violet umber, grey umber, warm grey, powder blue, black grey, warm umber, umber shadow, warm black and cool grey.

        Oct. 04, 2015

ERIC CHAN (b. 1975) Untitled, 2007, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM12,000 - RM16,000

This romantic image composed of delicate magnolia florals and a red bird are rendered in the artist’s signature treatment of surface on the canvas, encompassing a deliberate blurred edged which evokes a filmic contemporary aesthetic. The formation of shadows from the florals and refined choice of colour palette consisting of rich hues of purple, red, green, and white greatly enhances the splendid aura of the painting.   Based in Singapore, Chan received his Master of Fine Art in painting from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia in 2000. He has held numerous solo exhibitions including WANTED: possession and rejection at Chan Hampe Galleries, Singapore (2011), The Romantics of Betrayal ION Art Gallery, Singapore (2010), Fine Displacement at Amelia Johnson Contemporary, Hong Kong (2008), and most recently, Misfits and Bandits (2014/2015). Chan has also exhibited Hitchcock’s Love Affair with Abstract Expressionism (2013) at the Olympia Grand Hall in London’s Global Art Fair. The prestigious fair presented a solid consolidation of work from emerging artists across Asia, The Middle East, Africa as well as the West. In 2002, he was awarded the Juror’s Choice at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards and in 2003 the Highly Commended honor at the United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year Competition. In 2007, Chan was the first artist to launch the BMW Young Asian Artists series in collaboration with the Singapore Tyler Print Institute.   REFERENCE From Monochromes to In Between Odds: An interview with Eric Chan, Lee Weng Choy. http://www.ericchan.net/essay_2001_inbetween.html Lindy Poh, Wanted: Possession & Rejection, 2011, Chan Hampe Galleries, Singapore.

        Oct. 04, 2015

ERIC CHAN (b. 1975) Pink Lightness, 2001, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM12,000 - RM16,000

This evocative monochrome image is an abstraction based on a selection of organic forms derived from nature. It emanates a timeless seductive quality reminiscent of a film noir still, simulating the effect of a camera lens and allowing the viewer‘s mind for a moment to search and recollect memories of lost time. The painting stirs emotions and portrays glimpses into one’s thoughts and silent reflections, all captured in a single poetic scene.   Eric Chan’s signature treatment of surface is present, in which he creates detachment from blurring out the image by dragging his brush to create a deliberate atmospheric effect. The process of prepping the canvas and paint application rendering subtle tonal qualities remains a crucial factor in creating his technically accomplished works. During this period, fundamental questions on objectness, representation, and colour were considered before composing an image. Associated with the grey “photo paintings” of Gerhard Richter, both of their work displays similar effects in which the tension in their canvases compel the viewer to consider the act of looking, and “balances longing for something behind what is represented with an insistence that we can never know what is there.”   Chan displays dynamic oeuvre and boldness in challenging a wide repertoire of themes explored through multiple series and installations, i.e. Nightfalls (2006), Wanted (2011) and Another Place. Another Time (2007). Chan’s evolvement as an artist flourished from initially presenting a conceptual idea to gradually incorporating elements of life experience and personal narratives. Based in Singapore, Chan received his Master of Fine Art in painting from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia in 2000. He has held numerous solo exhibitions including WANTED: Possession and Rejection at Chan Hampe Galleries, Singapore (2011), The Romantics of Betrayal, ION Art Gallery, Singapore (2010), Fine Displacement at Amelia Johnson Contemporary, Hong Kong (2008), and most recently, Misfits and Bandits (2014/2015).
