        Est: €5,000 - €6,000

JEWGENI CHALDEJ (1917–1997) | Raising the flag on the Reichstag building, Berlin 1945 (2 versions) Image Size: 27,7 x 37,7 cm English: 26 x 37,9 cm / 27,7 x 37,7 cm Two Gelatin silver prints, both printed by the photographer in 1995 on double-weight semi-matte paper 27,8 x 39,2 cm / 29,9 x 39,7 cm, both in excellent condition. Annotated "Berlin 2 May 1945" in Cyrillic / Date of print "1995", both prints signed by the photographer, in felttip-pen / in pencil on the reverse. PROVENANCE From the collection of Hans-Jürgen Burkard, Hamburg. A few days after the storming of Berlin, the Soviet front reporter Khaldei and some soldiers staged this scene at the burning Reichstag building, which became a symbolic image for the end of the Second World War, often in a modified form: for example, in order to achieve a more dramatic effect, clouds of smoke were added to the picture by means of sandwich exposure with a shot taken in Russia. Furthermore, the second wristwatch of the soldier supporting the man at the flagpole was retouched (in order not to have in the picture what the invading Russians captured). The print exposed from the original negative thus shows a clear area of sky and both watches, the second print offered here the most common variant with added clouds of smoke and the watch retouched away.

Jewgeni Chaldej, The Reindeer Jascha, Murmansk, 1941

        Est: €800 - €1,000

Signed in pencil on the verso. "Our fighter planes were made of wood. That's why we breathed a sigh of relief when the English came with their twenty 'Hurricans'. This reindeer lived wildly. We called it Yascha. Then, when they were shooting, it kept coming to our battery, to the people. The soldiers built a small stable and fed it well. When the air-raid alarm was given, they would hit a railway track with a hammer -- din, din, din. Jascha heard this and came running. I was asked if this was a photomontage. For me it's a 'combination' to enhance the expression." (Jewgeni Chaldej, in: Volland/Krimmer, op.cit., p. 48)

"Atop the Berlin Reichstag, May 2, 1945". 1945/printed later. Gelatin silver print. 30,3 x 39,5 cm. Signed by the photographer in pencil on the verso. An interesting document, which Chaldej himself commented on: "Early in the morning on May 2, 1945, I entered it (the Reichstag). I was surrounded by horrendous noise, Russians and Germans were all shouting in horrible confusion ... A pleasant young soldier came up to me. I had a red flag in my hand. He said, 'Lieutenant, davai, let's hurry up and climb onto the roof with the flag' ... We started out, but all the stairs were badly damaged. When we finally got up the Reichstag was on fire. ...We found a long pole. I spent lots of time trying out different compositions. I took one picture from the left, but that wasn't any good. I wanted Berlin to be clearly visible in the picture. Then I said, 'Boys, go and stand over there and raise the flag ... then try over there'. There were three of them. One was from the Ukraine, the other from Machatshkala in Dagestan and the third was a Russian. ... I shot a whole roll of film, 36 shots." (cited in Volland/Krimmer, p. 151). – In excellent condition. Lit.: Ernst Volland/Heinz Krimmer (eds.). Von Moskau nach Berlin. Bilder des russischen Fotografen Jewgeni Chaldej. Vintage silver gelatin print, image size, 515 x 345mm, sheet size, 575 x 418mm, archivally mounted, with photographer’s copyright stamp verso. Footnote: Raising a Flag over the Reichstag is perhaps one of the most iconic photographs of World War II. Taken during the Battle of Berlin on 2 May 1945, this photograph was reprinted in thousands of publications and soon was recognised as one of the most significant images of that time, the symbol of the Soviet Russia victory over Nazi Germany. The photograph was taken by Yevgeny Ananyevich Khaldei, a Soviet Red Army naval officer and photographer, who is mostly known for the photographs taken during World War II, in particular this one.
