Marc Chagall[a] (born Moishe Shagal; 6 July [O.S. 24 June] 1887 – 28 March 1985) was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin.[2][1] An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.
Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra.
Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern Europe and Jewish folk culture. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country's most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1923.
He had two basic reputations, writes Lewis: as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. He experienced modernism's "golden age" in Paris, where "he synthesized the art forms of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, and the influence of Fauvism gave rise to Surrealism". Yet throughout these phases of his style "he remained most emphatically a Jewish artist, whose work was one long dreamy reverie of life in his native village of Vitebsk."[7] "When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is".

Eine komplette Suite von "Cirque" mit einheitlicher Nummerierung ist von extremer Seltenheit. The theme of the circus is one of the constant and most important motifs in Marc Chagall's oeuvre. His fascination goes back to his childhood, when he saw travelling troupes perform on the village square in Vitebsk. For him, the circus was a "metaphor of life" and in 1967 he wrote in "Le Cirque": "J'ai toujours considéré les clowns, les acrobates et les acteurs comme des êtres tragiquement humains qui ressembleraient, pour moi, aux personnages de certaines peintures religieuses" (I have always regarded clowns, acrobats and actors as tragically human beings who, for me, resembled the figures in certain religious paintings). Ambroise Vollard, himself a great friend of the circus, inspired Chagall to realise this complex theme in a series of prints. Chagall created 19 preparatory gouaches, but the joint Bible project probably led to the interruption of work on the circus. After Vollard's death, Tériade persuaded the artist to complete the large work. Chagall spent almost 30 years working on the idea of publishing his text "Cirque" with his own illustrations. In collaboration with the publisher Tériade, this work was realised between 1965 and 1967 and published in 1967. Chagall created 23 colour lithographs for the book, 3 of which are double-sided, as well as 15 lithographs in black. In addition to the book edition, a separate suite of the 23 colour lithographs was printed with a wide paper margin in a very small edition of only 24 copies. Each sheet in this suite is individually signed and numbered. "Cirque" is undoubtedly one of the most important and personal of all Chagall's illustrated books. The artist worked on the book from 1927 to 1930, but it was never completed during Vollard's lifetime. After 1945, Tériade acquired the preparatory work from Vollard's estate and finally published the work in 1952. In addition to the book edition with text and illustrations, Tériade published the so-called "Album" with all 100 etchings in an edition of 100 copies, printed on laid paper with wide margins and with a title page and imprint. Each sheet is individually signed by the artist. A milestone in the illustrated book of the 20th century, the "Album" in this form is extremely rare. Das vom Künstler immer wieder verwendete Motiv ist in der vorliegenden Komposition sehr zeichnerisch umgesetzt: Mit Pinsel und Feder sind die Figuren vielfältig gestaltet. Über der Szene schwebt ein Engel, Moses und das Volk leuchten aus dem in Schwarz gehaltenen Hintergrund hervor. Dramatisch und meisterhaft hielt der Künstler die Szene fest. Dort herrschten perfekte Arbeitsbedingungen: es standen ihm ein grosses Atelier und verschiedene Arbeitsräume zur Verfügung. Für das Portfolio "Nice et la Côte d’Azur" entstanden jeweils mehrere Vorarbeiten in Gouache. Dort herrschten perfekte Arbeitsbedingungen; es standen ihm ein grosses Atelier und verschiedene Arbeitsräume zur Verfügung. Mit zunehmendem Alter wandte sich Chagall neuen Medien und Materialien zu: Er bearbeitete die Farbe, kratzte sie weg und erprobte auch die Bildhauerei, die Töpferei und Keramik sowie die Mosaikkunst. Thematisch blieb er sich treu, seine Kunst kann als eine Mischung aus verschiedenen künstlerischen Strömungen wie dem Fauvismus, der russischen Volkskunst und der jüdischen Mystik interpretiert werden. Im hier angebotenen Gemälde von 1981 zeigt der Künstler den nächtlichen Dorfplatz seiner Heimatstadt Witebsk. Der Mond steht über den Dächern, am unteren Bildrand ist das ikonographische Motiv der Familie zu sehen. Im Zentrum steht ein rot leuchtender Esel am Wassertrog, darüber und rechts sind zwei Engel dargestellt. Der Esel ist ein Symbol des Umherziehens und des Unsteten, und verwurzelt in Chagalls eigener, rastlosen Biographie. Nur wenige Künstler haben erreicht, was Chagall gelungen ist: Seine Werke haben sich tief in das kollektive Gedächtnis der Kunstgeschichte eingegraben. Es sind vor allem der lyrische und spielerische Gestus, die unvergleichliche Ikonografie und die offensichtliche Lebensfreude, die sein Œuvre so einzigartig und unverwechselbar machen. Chagall blieb bis ins hohe Alter künstlerisch aktiv und arbeitete täglich in seinem Atelier. Nach einem erfüllten Leben verstarb er am 28. März 1985 im Alter von fast 98 Jahren im Schlaf. In 1966, Marc Chagall and his wife Vava moved into the villa "La Colline" in Saint-Paul, which had been specially designed for them. The working conditions there were perfect; he had a large studio and various workrooms at his disposal. As he grew older, Chagall turned to new media and materials: He worked with colour, scratched it away and also tried out sculpture, pottery and ceramics as well as mosaic art. Thematically, he remained true to himself, and his art can be interpreted as a mixture of various artistic movements such as Fauvism, Russian folk art and Jewish mysticism. In this painting from 1981, the artist depicts the village square of his home town of Vitebsk at night. The moon is above the rooftops and the iconographic motif of the family can be seen at the bottom of the picture. In the centre is a glowing red donkey at a water trough, with two angels depicted above and to the right. The donkey is a symbol of wandering and restlessness, and is rooted in Chagall's own restless biography. Few artists have achieved what Chagall did: his works have become deeply engraved in the collective memory of art history. It is above all the lyrical and playful gesture, the incomporable iconography and the obvious joie de vivre that make his oeuvre so unique and unmistakable. Chagall remained artistically active into old age and worked daily in his studio. After a full life, he died in his sleep on 28 March 1985 at the age of almost 98. Paper slightly brownish, fresh in colour Erläuterungen / Comments Nach seinen Ausbildungsjahren in Sankt Petersburg drängte es Marc Chagall, seine Kunst in Paris weiterzuentwickeln und neue Inspirationsquellen in den reichhaltigen Museumssammlungen, den bedeutenden Galerien und in der Konfrontation mit den Avantgardekünstlern zu suchen. Mit dem Erlös aus dem Verkauf zweier Bilder und einem kleinen Stipendium seines Gönners Maxim Winawer konnte er endlich 1911 über Berlin nach Frankreich reisen. Er bezog sein erstes Atelier in der Impasse du Maine (heute Rue Antoine Bourdelle), nahe der Gare Montparnasse. Im Winter 1911/1912 bezog er ein neues, grösseres Atelier in der 1902 vom Bildhauer Alfred Boucher gegründeten Künstlersiedlung "La Ruche" (Der Bienenkorb) im 15. Arrondissement. Dort fand er sich inmitten der internationalen Bohème von Paris wieder und begegnete den Avantgardisten von Montparnasse wie den Dichtern Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars und Max Jacob sowie Künstlern wie Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger oder Amedeo Modigliani. Wie im Fieber und dürstend nach Anerkennung entstanden im neuen Atelier nun auch grössere Formate. Für die Themen schöpfte der Maler in erster Linie aus dem persönlichen Vokabular, dem russischen Leben und den Ansichten von Witebsk, die ihn stark geprägt hatten. Formell flossen jedoch neue Stilrichtungen wie der Fauvismus, aber auch der Kubismus ein und trugen dazu bei, Chagalls äusserst persönliche malerische Ausdrucksweise zu entwickeln: gewissermassen das Verweben einer traditionellen Bildsprache, genährt mit den Neuerungen der Avantgarde. Der Dichter Apollinaire nannte seine Bildwelten denn auch "surnaturel" (übernatürlich). In Paris entstanden auch viele Gouachen, eine Technik, die der Künstler als geeignet fand, um seine spontanen Improvisationen umzusetzen. Auch die hier angebotene Gouache "Esquisse pour le Marchand de bestiaux" ist in dieser Zeit in Paris entstanden, als essenzielle Vorarbeit zum grossformatigen Gemälde von 1912, das sich heute im Kunstmuseum Basel befindet. Thematisch greift der Künstler auf Kindheitserinnerungen zurück, die er mit einem Onkel, einem Viehhändler, verbunden hatte. Der Künstler charakterisierte darin unterschiedliche Charaktere aus dem Händlerleben. Die Darstellung ist aber nicht nur persönlich-anekdotisch zu verstehen. Chagall nahm schon früh das Thema Migration auf, der das jüdische Volk ausgesetzt war, und den damit verbundenen, aufgezwungenen Neuanfängen, die auch sein weiteres Leben und Werk charakterisierten und prägten. Das blaue Tier auf dem Wagen erinnert an die späteren Darstellungen des "mystischen Tieres", das in Chagalls Werken für die Kreativität und Inspiration steht. After his years of training in St Petersburg, Marc Chagall felt the urge to further develop his art in Paris and to seek new sources of inspiration in the rich museum collections, the important galleries and in the confrontation with avant-garde artists. With the proceeds from the sale of two paintings and a small grant from his patron Maxim Winawer, he was finally able to travel to France via Berlin in 1911. He moved into his first studio in the Impasse du Maine (now Rue Antoine Bourdelle), near the Gare Montparnasse. In the winter of 1911/1912, he moved into a new, larger studio in the artists' housing estate "La Ruche" (The Beehive) in the 15th arrondissement, founded in 1902 by the sculptor Alfred Boucher. There he found himself in the midst of Paris' international bohemian scene and met the avant-gardists of Montparnasse such as the poets Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars and Max Jacob as well as artists such as Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger and Amedeo Modigliani. As if in a fever and thirsting for recognition, he now also produced larger formats in the new studio. For his themes, the painter primarily drew on his personal vocabulary, Russian life and the views of Vitebsk, which had strongly influenced him.
