Overall in good condition Erläuterungen / Comments In diesem Spätwerk führt Paul Cezanne den Betrachtenden exemplarisch vor Augen, wie gekonnt und mutig er bei der Gestaltung und Bearbeitung seiner Kompositionen mit dem Pinsel und der Farbe umzugehen wusste. Die fein gemalte Symphonie in Blau-, Grün- und Gelbtönen visualisiert seine Vision einer "reinen Malerei". Er hatte in der vielfältigen Natur ein feines Masswerk aus Rhythmus und Proportionen erkannt, eine architektonische Struktur, die wie ein kristallines Muster in den zufälligen Formarrangements enthalten war. Fast könnte man im Gemälde die alte Unterscheidung von "Natura" und "Cultura", also das Ursprüngliche und das Menschgemachte, exemplarisch erfasst sehen. "Paysage" stellt vermutlich einen Landschaftsausschnitt am Fusse des Mont Sainte-Victoire zwischen Aix und Tholonet dar. Cezanne kannte diesen Teil der Provence seit seiner Jugendzeit bestens, unternahm er doch schon mit seinem Jungendfreund Émile Zola so manchen Streifzug durch diese Gegend Südfrankreichs. Die spontan wirkende Bildfindung und die übereinander gestaffelte Schichtung loser Farbflächen verleihen dem Werk eine faszinierende Leichtigkeit und Modernität; man spürt exemplarisch Cezannes grossen Einfluss auf die nachfolgende Künstlergeneration. In this late work, Paul Cezanne shows the viewer how skilfully and courageously he knew how to handle brush and paint when designing and executing his compositions. Finely painted in shades of blue, green and yellow, this symphony of colours visualises his vision of "pure painting". He had discovered in the diversity of nature a subtle pattern of rhythm and proportions, an architectural structure that was contained in the random arrangements of forms like a crystalline pattern. One could almost see the old distinction between "natura" and "cultura", i.e. the original and the man-made, exemplified in the painting. "Paysage" probably depicts a section of the landscape at the foot of Mont Sainte-Victoire between Aix and Tholonet. Cezanne had known this part of Provence well since his youth, as he had often travelled through this region of southern France with his childhood friend Émile Zola. The seemingly spontaneous pictorial composition and the staggered layering of loose planes of colour lend the work a fascinating lightness and modernity; one can sense Cezanne's great influence on the following generation of artists.
