        KAREL ČERNÝ 1910 - 1960 - PARIS

        Est: -

Černý's urban landscape belongs to the period when he was fascinated by France, where he returned regularly in 1946-49. Upon his return, he painted still lifes informed by Cubism and night landscapes capturing feelings of loneliness. An outstanding painter, in the 1940s praised by Jindřich Chalupecký as one of the most talented painters of his generation, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Prof. J. Obrovský. At the beginning of his career, Karel Černý was influenced primarily by Preisler's melancholy, resonating also with the artist's hard life experiences. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: pencil, cardboard, Signed: sign. lower left: K Černý Š Paris 47

        KAREL ČERNÝ 1910 - 1960 - ON A RIVER

        Est: -

From the opinion of PhDr.Rey Michalové Ph.D .: "The judged painting" On the River "is an original, motivically rare and artistically brilliantly expressively felt work by Karel Černý, an unmissable solitaire in Czech modern painting which reflected both his subjective feelings and the climate of the time. His creative development was shaped by very intimate experiences and reflections of the environment. In addition to his melancholic character was added a physical disability - a disorder of the spine. His will to overcome all the obstacles and his fate is probably the cause of the unique power of his paintings. Relatively a lot of attention is paid in the literature to the Černý's First Residence in Paris (1946), in our context it is important that he also visited Antwerp at the same time. He wrote about Antwerp: "the steamboats themselves, the ships, the sailors, the taverns, the workers and the night - fantastic." Černý was artistically attracted by tightly shaped shapes, suitable for styling and emphasizing solid linear contours. The ship, transformed into a simplistic sign, represents the presence of man, is loaded with humanizing force and symbolizes the painter's loneliness. SOUTH BOHEMIAN LANDSCAPE

        Est: -

The most characteristic feature of Karel Černý's work is a simplified form, often transformed into a symbolizing sign, capturing the essence of the rendered theme. None of his works were created randomly and easily. Karel Černý's art was not a matter of temperament. He often returns to the topic, getting to know him very closely until the form of the final realization emerges in his head. As stated in the expert assessment of PhDr. Rea Michalová PhD.: "Since his first solo exhibition in 1942 it was very clear that Karel Černý is a painter of a deep feeling and sharp sensuality where he subordinates distinctly subjective experience of reality to a fixed pictorial composition. Assessed painting "South Bohemian landscape" processed in the spirit of author's fierce subjectivism as a "landscape of the soul" is a great example of how artists created a "new poetry" during the war. It was exactly this poetry which helped people get over the pessimism of the Protectorate. Through symbol and metaphor, it was able to clearly attract the viewer. The absence of a human being seems like as if the painter replaced figures with the columns of the telegraph line, which, however, can also be read as a kind of crosses or stigmas, scars on the body - the landscape. Clouds, which Černý himself called "pancakes", have the function of an emotional symbol, which is the "microtheme" of the painting: it determines the tune and meaning. While in other authors' landscapes, the cloud is "as heavy as a boulder," in this work the clouds sway across the sky alone but very poetically. " Karel Černý did not allow himself to be carried away by his peers in his work. He created a symbolic-emotional language with firm rules full of strong contours and large areas of color. In his lonely being, he found increasingly striking means of expression and projected the tuning of his soul onto the paintings. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Upper right „K Černý Š 42“

        STILL LIFE WITH ICE CREAM

        Est: -

This cheery still life with desserts shows elements of Expressionism, its plasticity emphasized by impasto brushwork. In contrast, deep black frames the individual elements, bestowing the painting with a sense of dynamics. The middlebrow subject may have reflected the artist’s sense for the common man, or perhaps his father’s pastry business still lifes featuring little delicacies are a frequent subject in Černý’s work. Karel Černý enjoyed using pigments to mix his own paint, and he returned to the subjects of restaurants, bars and still lifes often and with pleasure. Černý attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1933–1936, where he studied under Professor Jakub Obrovský, and he later became a member of the Mánes Union of Fine Artists. However, his beginnings were far from simple – initially he apprenticed as a mechanic, but as he dreamt of painting he set out to the academy to convince Jakub Obrovský of his talent. He also received praise for his unusual talent from Jindřich Chalupecký.
