In the early 1970s, Cemin moved to Europe to escape the Fascist political policies of his home country as well as to pursue his artistic studies. After completing a three-year printmaking program at L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Cemin moved to New York in the early 1980s. Cemin initially made a living in the United States through carpentry and by renovating lofts, before shifting his artistic practice to sculpture in 1983. Though he worked in awareness of conceptual art, Cemin developed a manner of working that blends craft with references to historical sculpture—using materials such as bronze that have a long-established history within the realm of the Euro-American art tradition. Saint Clair Cemin's work is currently held by a number of prominent collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Eli Broad Family Foundation and Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
