AFTER PIERRE-JULES CAVELIER (FRENCH, 1814-1894) A BRONZE FIGURE OF 'PENELOPE ASLEEP'LATE 19TH CENTURYVarious stamped marks 'J. CAVALIER / 510' and 'F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR'37cm high This bronze depicts Homer's sleeping Penelope, during her 20 year wait for her husband Odysseus to return from the Trojan wars. In her hand is a spool of yarn and further spools at her feet, reference to her weaving and unravelling a shroud for Laertes, one of her delaying tactics to fend off would-be suitors. The figure of sleeping Penelope was sculpted in marble by Pierre-Jules Cavelier (b. 1814 d. 1894) and first exhibited in 1842 with the title Femme Grecque Endormie, later changed to Penelope in 1849. It is now on display in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.
