He attended the University of Georgia between 1954 and 1958, where he studied painting but had difficulty with general classes. After serving for two years in Germany with the United States Army, Joseph returned to the United States and moved to San Francisco. He received his B.F.A. from The San Francisco Art Institute in 1962 and his M.F.A. from San Francisco State College in 1964. Throughout his time there he was strongly influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Painters, although he chose landscapes as his predominant subject. Joseph taught drawing and painting for two years at the Memphis Academy of Art and a further year at Southwestern, before moving to Northern California where he met and married his wife Jessica. His paintings from this period focused on rocky Pacific coastlines as well as images of wine country. Joseph, Jessica, and their children Adam and Sarah moved to Portugal in 1984, where they stayed for five years as he painted the Portuguese rural landscape. In 1989 they returned to America, living first in South Carolina on the coast, and then in the mountains of North Carolina, where he continues to work. His work is lauded in the Southeast as an important way of capturing the rapidly disappearing rural and agricultural landscape of the Carolinas, and his floral still lifes, harborscapes, and etchings are used frequently for tourism advertisements and promotional materials all over the country. He has been actively painting professionally and exhibiting his work since 1961 at galleries and museums all over the world, and his work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections. Collections of note include The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, Glaxo Wellcome, Inc, at Research Triangle Park, and The Ritz Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal.
