Design for a wall decoration. Black pencil. Inscribed 'Sallon / coté du boullevard' and (at the bottom) measurements in French feet. Provenance: P. Leroux 1967; Lodewijk Houthakker (two stamps L.3893 in the lower right corner, L.4533 at the reverse of the passe-partout). Peter Fuhring writes in his 1989 catalogue of the Houthakker collection that this drawing is typical of Cauvet's style of drawing in black pencil, the kind that is faithfully reproduced in his 'Receuil' of 1777. The two panels between the windows were to be painted with grisaille scenes in the medallions. Similar 'arabesque' panels, in the Beurdeley Collection, one of them inscribed or signed 'Cauvet', were formerly in the collection of Mathias Palokovits and are now in the ENSBA in Paris. Fuhring adds that in the sale of Cauvet's collection in 1789, several projects for arabesque panels are mentioned. Unfortunately, the descriptions are not precise enough for the present design to be positively identified. Description FR Projet d'un mur décoré. Graphite. Grafiet. Opschrift bovenaan: 'Sallon / coté du boullevard' en onderaan de afmetingen in Franse voet. Herkomst: P. Leroux 1967; Lodewijk Houthakker (twee stempels L.3893 rechtsonder elke tekening, L.4533 achteraan passe-partout); Private collectie, Antwerpen Peter Fuhring schrijft in zijn catalogus van de Houthakker collectie dat deze tekening erg de stijl ligt van Cauvet's potlood tekeningen die zeer precies werden gepubliceerd in zijn '"Recueil d'Ornemens à l'Usage des Jeunes Artistes" van 1777. De twee ovale medaillons tussen ramen zijn ontworpen om beschilderd te worden met taferen in grisaille. Fuhring vermeld twee gesigneerde (of geannoteerde) bladen met gelijkaardige grotesken in de collectie van de Academie des Beaux-Arts de Paris, overgenomen uit de collectie van Mathias Palokovits. Tenslotte acht Fuhring het mogelijk dat dit blad is beschreven in de boedelinventaris die werd opgemaakt na Cauvet's overlijden in 1789. Deze vermeld enkele ontwerpen in potlood van groteskenpanelen. Helaas zijn de beschrijving in het invenataris te algemeen om dit blad erin te identificeren.
