Lorenzo A. Castro, Two Seascapes with Dutch and English Ships

      Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Sadly, we know very little about the life of the seascape painter Lorenzo A. Castro. We know that he was born in Antwerp to the Portuguese painter Sebastian Castro who had settled on the Schelde and also specialised in seascapes. We also know that Lorenzo travelled extensively, with stays recorded in Lissabon, Genoa, Sicily and Malta. He also resided in London from 1672 to 1686, where he made a successful living painting Mediterranean scenes, and many of his works are still kept in both private and public collections in England.

      Est: €50,000 - €60,000

Signed lower left: L. A.CastroLorenzo A. Castro, an artist of Portuguese descent, was born in Antwerp and it was here that he received his artistic training, possibly from his father Sebastian. He took several sojourns to Lissabon, Genoa, Sicily and Malta before settling in England. The earliest signed and dated work by the artist was made in 1672 and is today kept in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Castro was probably active in England from at least 1686, and many of his works are still to be found there in both private and public collections. For example the Dulwich Picture Gallery which owns seven of his paintings, including the only work with recognisable geographic features which depicts a view of the Dutch town of Hoorn. The artists other works all comprise of cappricious arrangements of architectural features and ships with a primarily mediterranean flair.
