Casimiro Castro Sold at Auction Prices

Lithographer, Water colorist, b. 1826 - d. 1889

Casimiro Castro (24 April 1826 Tepetlaoxtoc – 8 January 1889 Mexico City), was a Mexican painter and lithographer, and is regarded as having been a leading graphic and landscape artist in nineteenth century Mexico.

Casimiro, son of Cristóval Castro and Mariana Feliciana Blancas, was born shortly after Mexico acquired its independence and experienced a period of political and social upheaval marked by wars, foreign invasions and conflicts. His work is a graphic documentation of this important phase in the history of Mexico. Casimiro studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City under the Italian-born artist Pietro Gualdi, and was also influenced by Claudio Linati Prevost, who introduced lithography to Mexico. Castro's first lithographs appeared in religious and literary publications such as "The Mexican Museum" in 1843 and "El Gallo Pythagorean" 1845. In 1849 he produced illustrations for the memorial service of the hero of Mexican independence, Agustín de Iturbide.

His most important project was México y Sus Alrededores (Mexico and its Environs), published in Mexico in 1855, which included 42 plates of Mexico City and surroundings, with contributions from J. Campillo.[2] The plates included aerial views drawn from balloons and rooftops.[3] The work was given to Maximilian I of Mexico, as he prepared to become emperor of Mexico.[4]

Castro's work records the changes in fashions in Mexico from republican austerity through the Industrial Revolution. According to Roberto Mayer in his "Nacimiento y Desarrollo del Album Mexico y Sus Alrededores", this book did not appear in true editions, and copies were printed when the market demanded. It was published in Mexico by 'Imprenta Lithographica de Decaen' in 1864.[5]

Casimiro Castro and Sigogne produced the "Album del Ferrocarril Mexicano, Colección de Vistas Pintadas del Natural (Mexican Railroad Album)" containing 25 chromolithographic plates, with Antonio García Cubas writing the text. The work was intended to commemorate the inauguration of the first railway line that ran from the Gulf coast port of Veracruz to Mexico City. It depicted views and surrounding landscapes along the route of the railway, and was published in 1877 by Víctor Debray.[6]

After his trip to Europe, Castro made prints of locations in Italy and Spain. He produced architectural drawings and prints of Mexican towns and interior designs, as well as posters for fairs and fashion houses, many of these showing art nouveau trends.[7]

Casimiro Castro (Mexican, 1826-1889), an illustrated title page for "Mexico y Sus Alrededores. Vistas, Trajes y Monumentos" (Mexico and Its Surroundings, Views, Costumes, and Monuments), issued between 1855 and 1869, V. Debray, editor. A stunning chromolithograph that served as the title page for a rare book about Mexico during the golden era of pictorial travel books that provided documentary descriptions of the great civilizations of Mesoamerica. This chromolithograph (different from the colored lithographs within the volume) was attained via a special process using anywhere from eight to forty stones, one for each color. The chromist was someone who specialized in analyzing the piece and breaking down the colors necessary to recreate a painting in ink. Note the lustrous gold tones of the background and the word "Mexico", the rich green cacti and pink blossoms, the many details as well as the subtle modeling evident in the figures, flora, and sculpture. Size: sheet measures 10.25" W x 13.875" H (26 cm x 35.2 cm); 16" W x 19.75" H (40.6 cm x 50.2 cm) with mat Casimiro Castro was a Mexican artist who was revered for his landscapes in nineteenth century Mexico. He studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, under the tutelage of Italian-born Pietro Gualdi. "Mexico y Sus Alrededores" was his most significant project. It included 42 plates depicting Mexico City and its surroundings, the people and their beautiful attire, the decorative architectural facades, and the impressive monuments - 31 by Castro and some by Juan Campillo. Most emphasis was placed upon the images as opposed to descriptive text. The handsome volume was given to Maximilian Hapsburg, as he was preparing to become emperor of Mexico.
