      • Charles I, Worcester mint, halfcrown, undated, m.m. castle on obverse, helmet on reverse, obv., King on horseback riding left over grassy ground with W, horse’s tail behind legs
        Apr. 26, 2024

Charles I, Worcester mint, halfcrown, undated, m.m. castle on obverse, helmet on reverse, obv., King on horseback riding left over grassy ground with W, horse’s tail behind legs

        Est: £3,000 - £4,000

Charles I, Worcester mint, halfcrown, undated, m.m. castle on obverse, helmet on reverse, obv., King on horseback riding left, W below over grassy ground with W, horse’s tail behind legs, rev., square-topped crowned and garnished shield, large crown with plain interior (i.e. without hatching), bird-headed harp, 14.56g (Allen obverse B, reverse an unlisted variety of Allen 5; cf. Brooker 1140A-42; N. 2587; S. 3096), double-struck, very fine For another example of this coin, see Murdoch lot 189 (‘an unpublished variety’) / Farquhar lot 109 / Patrick Finn list 5, Autumn 1995, no. 332, where the piece is discussed and clearly illustrated. In 1995 Finn pointed out that the reverse bears a close resemblance to Allen reverse 3 (m.m. castle, associated with Allen obverse A) and that the contemporaneous Seaby plate coin (S. 3096, ex Lockett 3519) represented a die duplicate. It may be stated that the present coin is a third specimen from the same dies and it should be observed that more recent editions of the standard catalogue illustrate a different coin as S. 3096. Provenance: E.K. Burstal, Sotheby, 6 November 1912, lot 188; Cumberland Clark, Sotheby, 22 January 1914, lot 162; G.J. Bascom, Sotheby, 15 June 1914, lot 175; E.W. Wheeler, Sotheby, 12 March 1930, lot 445; Spink’s Numismatic Circular, April-May 1932, (15248), J. Campion, Glendining, 30 November 1937, lot 603; A.E. Bagnall, Spink’s Numismatic Circular, February 1964 (1362).
