Vielfigurige, alttestamentliche Szene mit Moses in der linken Bildhälfte. Castiglione hatte sich auf die Darstellung von Szenen aus dem Alten Testament, insbesondere der Stammväter spezialisiert. - Auf blaues Trägerpapier kaschiert, mit kleinen Wurmlöchern, fixiertem Einriss rechts unten, geglätteten Quetschfalten und Knitterspuren sowie Flecken. - Provenienz: ehemals Sammlung Philipp Herrmann, Karlsruhe (geb. 1899; Sammlerstempel recto unten (Lugt 1352a)). 1975 bei Karl & Faber geschätzt. Die Frage nach der Identität des Dargestellten wurde in der Literatur unterschiedlich beantwortet - während Bartsch, Nagler und Le Blanc darin ein Selbstporträt Castigliones sahen, halten Marcenaro und Bellini es für ein Porträt Gian Lorenzo Berninis und datieren es auf das Ende der 1640er Jahre, etwa um die Entstehung der Folge der "Großen Orientalenköpfe". Unverkennbar ist der Einfluss von Rembrandts Selbstbildnissen. - Ganz ausgezeichneter, kräftiger und dabei nuancierter Druck mit feinem Rändchen um die Facette. Rotatori, Genova 2022, pp. 94-95, n; 1 Riconosciuto da Anna Orlando alla mano di Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione nel 2005 e successivamente da Timothy Standring, il dipinto raffigura il Viaggio di Rebecca. Il tema fu più volte affrontato dall'artista che, ispirandosi agli esodi patriarcali di Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, coglieva l'opportunità di descrivere con spigliatezza naturalistica paesaggi, animali e formidabili brani di natura morta. In un documento romano del 1635 infatti, il Castiglione risulta noto in virtù di tali soggetti: 'Il Quale dipingeva Spesso li viaggi di Giacobbe' (Cfr. Archivio di Stato di Roma, Tribunale criminale del Governatore, Processi, vol. 302 22 marzo 1635 e giorni seguenti, 893-1007, pubblicata in parte da Antonino Bertolotti, Artisti subalpini a Roma XV, Secoli XVI e XVII, Mantova 1884 [edizione Bologna 1965], pp. 177-186). È quindi importante notare che la tela è giudicata dalla studiosa tra le sue prime prove, valutando l'incertezza se compiuta ancora a Genova o subito dopo il suo arrivo nella Città Eterna avvenuto nel 1632. Detto ciò, se la stringatezza del paesaggio può suggerire una genesi ancora ligustica, è interessante riscontrare curiose similitudini con gli esiti del cosiddetto Maestro della Betulla/Gaspard Dughet, ponendo di conseguenza il quesito affatto trascurabile del contributo al genere paesistico apportato a Roma dal Grechetto (Cfr. A. F. Blunt, Poussin Studies, V; The Silver Birch Master, in The Burlington Magazine 1950, pp. 69-73; S. Alloisi, Note sul Maestro della Betulla, in Intorno a Poussin, catalogo della mostra a cura di R. Vodret, Roma 1994, pp. 114-125). Bisogna allora tener bene a mente il suo bagaglio culturale, sapendo che a Genova ebbe modo di respirare il naturalismo di Sinibaldo Scorza, di Jan Roos e della cultura fiamminga, suggestioni che l'autore fece confluire agli insegnamenti del Poussin, dei bamboccianti e del cortonismo, compendiandoli in maniera singolarissima quanto la sua predilezione di vestire 'all'Armena', di 'fingersi greco, e sconosciuto'. Appare quindi straordinaria la simbiosi tra i soggetti delle sue tele e l'indole inquieta e viaggiatrice, poco incline a poter essere classificata, ma al contempo fondamentale fonte d'ispirazione per moltissimi artefici. Basti pensare ad Andrea De Lione, a Pier Francesco Mola e Pietro Testa, senza dimenticare Salvator Rosa, tutti accomunati da un temperamento che Luigi Salerno definì 'del dissenso', riconoscendo al Castiglione un ruolo iniziatico per tutti loro e forse, esordendo proprio da questo precoce Viaggio di Rebecca. B. 31, Bellini 8, TIB (Commentary) .031 S3. -- -- Die Frage nach der Identität des Dargestellten wurde in der Litertur unterschiedlich beantwortet - während Bartsch, Nagler und Le Blanc darin ein Selbstporträt Castigliones sahen, halten Marcenaro und Bellini es für ein Porträt Gian Lorenzo Berninis und datieren es auf das Ende der 1640er Jahre, etwa um die Entstehung der Folge der "Großen Orientalenköpfe". Unverkennbar ist der Einfluss von Rembrandts Selbstbildnissen. - Ausgezeichneter Druck mit Rändchen um die Plattenkante. Auf Büttenkarton aufgezogen, minimal fleckig und angestaubt, sonst in sehr schöner Erhaltung. Sul volume il titolo e la firma "Genium Io: Benedicti Castilionis Ianuen Inv. Fe.". All'angolo inferiore destro dedica a Matthys van de Merwede firmata da De Rossi. Bellissima impressione nel II stato su 3, con in basso l'indirizzo "Si vendono in Roma da Gio: Iacomo de Rossi" seguito dalla data "1648", stampata con segno pieno e brillante su carta vergellata con filigrana "corona a cinque punte sormontata da stella a sei punte" (simile a Woodward 264).
