    Est: €12,000 - €14,000

Certificate Timothy J. Standring, 13.2.2019. In this study, the Genoese painter Castiglione first laid down the figures with oil and an almost dry brush before adding pigment to the faces. As Timothy J. Standring noted in his report in 2019, this technique is rather atypical for him. Nevertheless, the stylistic similarities between the heads from the study and those from the "Heidnischen Opfer" (Zurich, private collection) suggest that the present work was created in preparation for the Zurich work. According to Standring, it is plausible that it was created around the middle or second half of the 1650s, when Castiglione was travelling between Rome, Genoa and Mantua.

(Genoa 1609/1616–1664/1670 Mantua) A satyr and flock near a herm, oil on canvas, 36 x 70.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private European collection We are grateful to Anna Orlando for endorsing the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. She dates this work to circa 1632–1633, during Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione’s first stay in Rome. Her written analysis accompanies this lot. The balanced arrangement of the figurative and landscape elements, as well as the dominating earthy ochre tones with highlights in blue, red and green are typical of Grechetto’s work. The horizontal composition of this painting relates to two similar works by Grechetto representing Circe and Ulysses and Juno with Io and Argus, both in private collections (see Anna Orlando, Gio. Benedetto Castiglione. Il Grechetto Genovese a Roma. Commitenza e opera, Genoa 2022, cat. nos. 4a, 4b, pp. 104–107). Despite the differing measurements, Orlando has suggested, that the three paintings may have been part of a series created for the decoration of a private room, such as a studiolo of one of his collectors. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was born in Genoa in 1609. During the 1620s he trained in the studio of Sinibaldo Scorza, as well as being influenced by the work of Giovanni Battista Paggi and Andrea de Ferrari, in an artistic climate heavily influenced by the Genoese sojourns of Rubens and Van Dyck. From 1632 he is documented with his brother Salvatore in Rome where within a brief period of time he was elected a member of the Accademia di San Luca. His exposure to Rome’s cultured circles, the influence of Nicolas Poussin’s painting evoking the ancient classical world, as well as his subsequent contact with the Neapolitan art world, in particular with Aniello Falcone and Andrea De Leone, were to be determining and transformative factors in Castiglione’s assimilation of the Baroque style. Subsequently he resided in Rome for a second time between 1647 and 1651. At the start of the 1650s Grechetto was summoned to the court of the Gonzaga where he worked for over a decade, also acting as an agent in the acquisition of paintings for the ducal collections. He died in Mantua in 1664.

    Nov. 03, 2022

GIOVANNI B. CASTIGLIONE The Bodies of Saints Peter and Paul Hidden in the Catacomb.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

GIOVANNI B. CASTIGLIONE The Bodies of Saints Peter and Paul Hidden in the Catacomb. Etching, circa 1647-51. 302x205 mm; 12x8 1/8 inches, thread margins. A superb, dark, richly-inked and early impression. Castiglione (1609-1664) was among the most original graphic artists of the 17th century, exchanging prints and ideas with his contemporary Rembrandt van Rijn, among others, as well as being one of the first artists to experiment significantly with the monotype technique. The ambitious composition of The Bodies of Saints Peter and Paul Hidden in the Catacomb reflects the influence of Rembrandt's luminous compositions in which Christian tales are transformed into something metaphysical. The subject derives from the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voraigne, which suggests that the saints' bodies were cast into a well near the clandestine catacomb vault, seen here in Castiglione's dramatic rendering. The artist often etched such erudite subjects to advertise his art and prowess as a painter-philosopher to the literati in Rome and those on the grand tour. Provenance: Johann Andreas Boerner, Nuremberg, with his name and inscription in ink verso (Lugt 270). Bartsch 14; Percy 21.

  • Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Allegory of the Arts The Philosopher Diogenes
    Jun. 05, 2021

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Allegory of the Arts The Philosopher Diogenes

    Est: €55,000 - €65,000

These two paintings were attributed to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione following an analysis by Dr Anna Orlando, who described them as “two exquisite original works - squisite opere autografe” and dated them to the artist's mature phase. Following his artistic training in his home town of Genoa, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione travelled widely throughout Italy, visiting Rome, Naples, Mantua and Venice. An innovative and talented artist, Castiglione invented the monotype technique and was a remarkable draughtsman. He was also versatile and cultivated, often choosing complex motifs, enigmatic allegorical depictions and mythological subjects for his works. These two paintings both reflect the artist's cultural interests, which were closely connected to Neo-Stoicism. The chosen subject expresses complex allegorical connections that interact in an almost philosophical dialogue. The allegory of the arts, which can be seen as a parallel to another of Grechetto's preferred subjects, is to be regarded as a reference to demiurgic artistic activity: Reality is changed and improved through “technè”; whereas Diogenes, who sought after the noble nature of human beings and in the end found only animals, embodies the unattainability of the desired ideal. The artist expresses a complex message in the way in which the two motifs interact with one another: Although the arts strive to change nature in order to create a refined and more dignified reality, Diogenes bears witness to the mundane and brutish nature of humankind, and thus to the impossibility of creating a better reality through intellectual activity.

    May. 10, 2020

    Giovanni Castiglione (1617-1670) Italian, Etching

    Est: $400 - $800

Etching by Giovanni Castiglione, an Italian Baroque artist, printmaker and draftsman from Genoa. He was also known as Il Grechetto, with possible dates of 1609 to 1665, and is credited with inventing the monotype printmaking technique. He was influenced by Van Dyck and Rubens, and you can see the influence of Rembrandt in the etching here. He had various run-ins with the law because he had a bad temperament, but that doesn't detract from the quality of this etching. He was known for portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes as well. The etching shows a man in a turban, with a beard and mustache, from the series of five subjects entitled "Great Studies of Heads from the Orient", circa 1640. Signed in the upper left with his native Genoa ("Genovese") under his name. The overall size is 14 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. wide and the sight size is 7 1/4 x 6 1/8 in. wide.

    GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE, att. to

    Est: €2,500 - €3,500

GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE, att. to (Genoa 1609 - Mantua 1664) NOAH'S ARK Oil on canvas, cm. 29,5 x 39,5 Gilded frame PROVENANCE Neapolitan family The small painting refers to the large painting with the same subject, located in Dresden, Gemäldegalerie. The canvas in question presents the episode narrated in the same way as the work in the museum; the pictorial quality is quite high even if the brush strokes appear more biting in the drapery and in the skin tones of Noah. It can be concluded that it could be a small replica made in the Castiglione workshop with the possibility of the intervention of the maestro himself. CONDITION OF THE PAINTING Late eighteenth-century re-lining. Spread integrative restorations on the pictorial surface GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE e bottega (Genova 1609 - Mantova 1664) L'ARCA DI NOÈ Olio su tela, cm. 29,5 x 39,5 Cornice dorata PROVENIENZA Famiglia napoletana Il piccolo dipinto ha come riferimento la grande tela che ha per tema lo stesso soggetto, ubicata a Dresda, Gemaldegalerie. La tela in questione presenta l'episodio narrato in maniera identica all'opera museale.
