        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

GIOVANNI BATTISTA CASTELLO "THE GENOVESE" (Genoa, 1547-ca.1637). "The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen. 1580. Tempera and gold on vellum. Dated in the central area of the lower margin. On the back, enclosed is a handwritten letter, dated 1897, addressed to the "director delles R. Galleries di Venezia". There are slight faults in the frame. Bibliography: De Laurentiis, Elena. "Il pio Genovese. Giovanni Battista Castello" in Alumina, pagine miniate, no. 37, April-June 2012, pp. 26-35, repr. p. 26. Size: 25 x 18 cm; 40 x 24 cm (frame). The painter Giovanni Battista Castello specialised in miniatures and tempera illuminations, a field in which he showed his full technical mastery. This is evident in this exceptional illumination, a work about which the expert Elena De Laurentiis has written: "this unpublished miniature is one of the earliest known works by the artist and is characterised by a meticulous and exquisite attention to detail. The model derives from a free interpretation of Giulio Romano's fresco of the same subject in the church of San Stefano in Genoa. Castello's brilliant and refined use of colour is notable, and Laurentiis compares it to The Adoration of the Magi of 1588 (Städel Museum, Frankfurt). Although he starts from Giulio Romano's painting, he adds and subtracts characters to accommodate his own narrative quest. As in Romano's composition, two planes coexist, the earthly and the heavenly, in dialogue with each other. Between the two, the city of Jerusalem is shown amidst ruins and obelisks. The shattering of glory alludes to the mystical vision of the young martyr, who was condemned to be stoned to death for infuriating the Jewish priests of the Sanhedrin. Dressed in a deacon's robe, he commends himself to God by opening his arms, while a thief is about to drop a stone on his head. The group of mercenaries is set against the common people, who are scandalised by the atrocious act. The brocades of the tunics, the trimmings and the silks are masterfully rendered. The narrative is also rich in anecdotes: children climbing a tree, the varied dramatisation of the different social classes, the heavenly cloud that welcomes the Father and Son in a border of seraphs... Giovanni Battista Castello was born in Genoa into a family of artists. The elder brother of the painter Bernardo Castello (1557-1629), he was nicknamed "The Genoese" to distinguish him from a painter of the same name (Giovanni Battista Castello "The Bergamesque"). He trained in the studio of Luca Cambiaso (1527-1585), considered the most prolific Genoese artist of the period. Giovanni Battista soon distinguished himself as an independent painter and became known as one of the city's leading illustrators. So great was the artist's fame as a miniaturist and illuminator that he came to the attention of Philip II of Spain, who hired Castello in 1584 as illuminator of the royal choir books at El Escorial. Documentary evidence reveals that Castello had returned to his native city in 1590, where in 1599 he was commissioned by Margaret of Austria to copy an icon for the church of San Bartolomeo degli Armeni. The years around the turn of the century mark the most prolific period of his career, by which time he had acquired great prestige, as is shown by Raffaello Soprani's description of him in his Vite dei Pittori, Scultori et Architetti Genovesi (1674), praising Castello's "colorita con esquisitezza meravigliosa". Soprani describes him as one of the best miniaturists of his time, comparable to Giulio Clovio (1498-1578), who according to his biographer Vasari was considered the "piccolo e nuovo Michelangelo".

Illumination on vellum in tempera and gold on vellum, measurements: 25 x 18 cm. Giovanni Battista Castello was born in Genoa into a family of artists. Older brother of the painter Bernardo Castello (1557-1629), he was nicknamed “El Genovés” to distinguish him from Giovanni Battista Castello “El Bergamesco” (ca.1509-1569). He trained in the studio of Luca Cambiaso (1527-1585), considered the most prolific Genoese artist of the time. Giovanni Battista Castello distanced himself from the other apprentices. and soon rose to prominence as a freelance artist with a reputation as one of the city's leading illustrators. Castello specialized in miniatures and illuminations in tempera on parchment, a field in which he fully showed his technical mastery, as is evident in this beautiful work. So great was the artist's fame that he caught the attention of Philip II of Spain who hired Castello in 1584 as an illuminator for the royal choir books at El Escorial. Documentary evidence reveals that Castello had returned to his hometown in 1590 and it was there that in 1599 he received a commission from Margaret of Austria, wife of Philip III, to copy an icon for the church of San Bartolomeo degli Armeni. The years around the turn of the century mark the most prolific period in Castello's career, a time when he had already acquired enormous prestige, as is clear from Raffaello Soprani's description of him in his Vite dei Pittori, Scultori et Architetti Genovesi (1674), praising Castello's “colorita with meravigliosa exquisiteness”. Soprani describes him as one of the best miniaturists of his time and comparable to Giulio Clovio (1498-1578), who according to his biographer Vasari was considered the “piccolo e nuovo Michelangelo”. Regarding the present work, the expert Elena De Laurentiis has written: “This unpublished miniature is one of the earliest known works by the artist and is characterized by meticulous and exquisite attention to detail. The model derives from a free interpretation of Giulio Romano's painting of the same theme found in the church of Santo Stefano in Genoa”. Castello's brilliant and refined use of color is evident in this work, which can be compared to The Adoration of the Magi, signed and dated 1588, in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. • GIOVANNI BATTISTA CASTELLO "IL GENOVESE" (GENOA, 1549-1639) THE STONING OF SAINT STEPHEN.
        Apr. 29, 2021

GIOVANNI BATTISTA CASTELLO "IL GENOVESE" (GENOA, 1549-1639) THE STONING OF SAINT STEPHEN.

        Est: €25,000 - €37,500

Giovanni Battista Castello "Il Genovese" (Genoa, 1549-1639) The stoning of Saint Stephen. Tempera and gold on parchment. Dated 1580. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Saint Stephen was sentenced to stoning after enraging the Jewish priests of the Sanhedrin. The scene represents the moment of the stoning, the saint, dressed in deacon clothes, entrusts himself to God, while the expressive executioners prepare to start stoning him. At the top witnessing everything are God the Father and Christ. The work presented here, of an exquisite color, is characterized by its precious and meticulous descriptivism. On the back handwritten document of the director of the Gallery of the Academy of Venice, Giulio Castalamessa dated 1897. Bibliography. Listed in the book by Elena de Laurentiis: "Il pio Genovese. Giovanni Battista Castello", Alumina, pagine miniate, n.37, April-June 2012, pp. 26-35. In this publication, Professor Elena de Laurentiis affirms that this work that we present is one of the first known works of the Genoese artist. The model derives from a free interpretation of the painting by Giulio Romano, of the same motif, which is preserved in the Church of Santo Stefano in Genoa. It can be compared with the "Adoration of the Magi", signed and dated 1588, which is in the Wildenstein Collection in Paris. 24 x 18 cm. Giovanni Battista Castello "Il Genovese" was trained in the studio of Luca Cambiaso (1527-1585), who was considered the most prolific artist in Genoa at the time. He separated himself from the rest of the apprentices and would soon stand out as an independent artist, emerging as one of the main illustrators in the city. He specialized in miniatures and tempera illuminations on parchment, a technique in which he was able to demonstrate his mastery and virtuosity, as can be seen in the beautiful work presented here. Such was his fame as a miniaturist that he soon reached the ears of King Felipe II, who in 1584 hired him as the illuminator of the Royal Books of Coro del Escorial. The most prolific moment in Giovanni Battista Castelli's career occurred between the last decades of the 16th century and the first decades of the 17th century. According to Raffaello Soprani in his "Vite de Pittori, Scultori et Architetti Genovesi" (1674), he praises his "colorite with meravigliosa esquisitezza", describes him as one of the best miniaturists of the time, comparable to Giulio Clovio (1498-1578) who according to Giorgio Vasari, his biographer, he defined it as the “piccolo e nuovo Michelagnolo”.

Beham e a famosi dipinti. Riteniamo che la pergamena sia databile verso il 1590. THE PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN THE PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN measurements note 241 by 180mm; 9 1/2 by 7 1/16 in dated in brown ink, on the stone step: 1589.; signed with monogram, dated and inscribed in brown ink, on vellum attached to backing board: BC 1589/genova gouache heightened with gold, over black chalk on vellum, laid down on board, backed with vellum NOTE Giovanni Battista Castello was one of the most renowned miniaturists of his time. In the 1580s, he was commissioned to illuminate the choir books of El Escorial by King Philip II of Spain, probably on the recommendation of his teacher, Luca Cambiaso, who was working in Spain in 1584. However, as may be seen from the inscription on the backing, Castello had returned to Genoa by 1589. This is one of the earliest known miniatures by the artist.
