        Dominador Castañeda (1904-1967)

        Est: ₱30,000 - ₱39,000

Barrio Scene signed and dated 1949 (lower left) oil on wood 16" x 20" (41 cm x 51 cm)   Dominador Castañeda’s first encounter with art dates back to his early childhood years, when he spent most of his time coloring the French book of drawing lessons his father gave him. However, despite his father’s initiative in introducing him to the arts and taking him to lessons, he did not want the young Castañeda to become a painter and tried to steer him away from the arts. The elder Castañeda gave him an air gun, hoping that he would hunt and roam around the fields. Instead, the sceneries Dominador saw made him even more compelled to paint and wish for a painting career. Beginning with his cloud studies, Dominador Castañeda’s paintings reflected the beguiling sceneries he observed in his childhood. His oeuvre features realistic images of the Philippine countryside, bathed in the cool tones of the afternoon air, and exudes a profound sense of tranquility and nostalgia. Aside from being an artist, Castañeda further instilled his name in the art world when he started teaching at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in 1937, where he mentored several would-be prominent Filipino artists. Indeed, Castañeda left a lasting legacy in the art world. He may have left only a few paintings, but his knowledge and teachings were perpetually imbued in his students’ lives and works. PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Manila Post Office and Jai-Alai Building on Taft Avenue, February 1945 signed, dated 1967, and inscribed “from the original sketch done in 1945“ (lower right) oil on canvas 36” x 44” (91 cm x 112 cm) WRITE UPThe other, entitled Taft Avenue, was executed in oil on canvas in 1967 for Don José Antonio Araneta, based on a watercolor entitled, Cityscape done by Castañeda in 1945. The 4 ½ foot X 5 foot canvas depicts the once majestic Taft Avenue with the war-torn ruins of the Manila Jai-Alai Building, Santa Isabel College, the Philippine Normal School, and the Manila City Hall, and the Legislative Building, and the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Mary & St. John seen at a distance. The barren trunk and branches of a once leafy tree frames the ruined cityscape before it while debris, fallen branches, and an overturned car underscore the chaos and displacement brought about by war. Castañeda veered away from war subjects as the years of Reconstruction progressed and he produced once again beautiful landscapes such as one depicting the new U.P. Campus in Diliman (1951) from the National Museum of Fine Arts Collection and another depicting the rebuilt Antipolo Church (1956). Castañeda continued to teach at the U.P. School of Fine Arts in Diliman and succeeded Guillermo Tolentino as Director, serving from 1955-1962. Among his students was the painter and historian, Alfredo Roces, who proudly cited him as his first art teacher. In 1964, he wrote a seminal tome on Philippine art history entitled, Art in the Philippines, which became a standard reference book for many years. He continued painting until his waning years and passed away 89 PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. Castañeda was posthumously given the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan by the City of Manila in 1971. In the same year, a retrospective of his works was held at the Solidaridad Gallery with a catalogue of his works. And in 2023, a monograph on his works, entitled Dominador Castañeda, Painter, Teacher, Writer was published, a project which his granddaughter, Angela Castañeda Melo, pursued against all odds to honor his life and works. Est: ₱600,000 - ₱780,000

PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION The Capitan Pepe and Margarita David Buildings at Calle Azcarraga y Avenida Rizal, after the Battle of Manila signed (lower right) ca. 1945 oil on canvas 20” x 26” (51 cm x 66 cm) WRITE UPAfter the Battle of Manila in 1945, Castañeda documented through drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings a war-ravaged Manila showing familiar Manila landmark buildings damaged, ablaze, or reduced to rubble similar to paintings and drawings by Fernando C. Amorsolo and photographs by Teodulo Protomartir. Many of these drawings, depicting the ruins of Intramuros, the Legislative Building, Jones Bridge, the Manila Post Office, the Quiapo Church, the Binondo Church, the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, U.P. Manila, and Taft Avenue, done mostly in lead and colored pencils, were included in the catalogue of the retrospective exhibit of the works of Dominador Castañeda held at the Solidaridad Galleries in 1971. A dramatic depiction of the Battle of Manila by Castañeda dated 1945 shows the war-torn intersection of Calle Azcarraga (now C.M. Recto Avenue) and Avenida Rizal (now Rizal Avenue), with two significant American Colonial Era buildings standing erect amidst the bombings and fires raging around them. These two buildings are the Capitan Pepe Building on the southwest corner and the Margarita David Building on the northwest corner. Both buildings were built in 1938 and were commissioned by two formidable women: Doña Narcisa “Sisang” Buencamino vda. de Leon, a wealthy landowner from San Miguel, Bulacan who was one of the founders of LVN Pictures, and Doña Margarita David y Puatu who upon her death at age 76 in 1941 left landholdings in Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and Rizal. Two prominent architects designed the two buildings: Natiional Artist for Architecture Juan Nakpil for ABOVE: The old Kapitan Pepe building at the corner of Azcarraga St. (now C.M. Recto) and Avenida Rizal. the Capitan Pepe Building and Architect Juan A. Sison for the Margarita David Building. Both housed two hotels: the Central Hotel at the Capitan Pepe Building and the Hotel Filipinas at the Margarita David Building. Both had roof terraces and gardens. The Moonlit Terrace at the Capitan Pepe Building was better known for its music, dancing, and dining and was patronized by socialites, government officials, politicians, and movie stars. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the Capitan Pepe Building was partially bombed and its’ first floor was later used as office of the civilian police during the early Post-War years. Both buildings were rebuilt after the war and have survived to date. (IPR)
