Lucy Casson, b.1960, Running Wild Pigs, a hand-operated automaton, coloured tinplate, wire, wood, 24cm high, 83cm wide, 36cm deep Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: The wires connecting the pigs to the winding wire move the pigs up and down in a running motion, making a very satisfactory clatter. Lucy Casson studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and at the Hereford College of Art. She has received many commissions from public and private collectors, including the Victoria & Albert Museum for her small figures which she makes largely from found plastic objects, tin cans, printed sheet metal, textiles, wood and wire. She has translated her precise observations of banal everyday scenes into animated tableaux with a humorous and authentic understanding of human attributes. Many of her earlier works were automata, such as these pigs, which were exhibited and much wound by visiting children at the exhibition at the Chertsey Museum in 1996 where I first saw it. Provenance: Purchased, Crafts Council, October 1996. Note: Lucy Casson studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and Hereford College of Art. Often using found materials, she creates lively animated scenes. The Victoria & Albert Museum hold one of her works. Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
