          Est: $300 - $600

Sir Hugh Casson (United Kingdom, 1910 - 1999) "Hampton Court Palace" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society Great Britian 15p Hampton Court stamp issued May 7, 1980. The vast, red brick palace known as Hampton Court elegantly sprawls along the banks of the Thames in London. An honor guard of carved lions defends the palace gate. King Henry VIII's coat of arms hangs at its entrance. And, legend claims that the ghosts of two of his wives still roam its many galleries. Hampton Court was built by Cardinal Wolsey as his private residence in 1514. Its splendor challenged every palace in England and helped establish Wolsey as a powerful official. Unfortunately, Henry VIII, jealous of Wolsey's elegant home, began to resent his political influence. In a vain attempt to regain the king's favor, Wolsey presented Hampton Court, complete with rich tapestries and hundreds of servants, to the king. Hampton Court was the greatest gift ever presented to the English monarch and the residence soon became Henry VIll's favorite castle. He rebuilt the chapel and added the Great Hall with its impressive hammerbeamed roof. To the elegance of Hampton Court Palace, King Henry VIII brought five of his six wives. His third wife, Jane Seymour died in childbirth there and Catherine Howard, his fifth queen, was executed for adultery. After King Henry VIII's death, no one disturbed the ghosts of Hampton Court Palace for over one hundred years. Then, in 1689, Christopher Wren built the eastern section of the palace for William IV. Today, the two additions blend together and Hampton Court Palace stands as a monument to some of the greatest memories in British history. Image Size: 12.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 14 x 16 in. Unframed. (B06020)

          Sir Hugh Casson (1910 - 1999) "Windsor Castle" W/C

          Est: $350 - $700

Sir Hugh Casson (United Kingdom, 1910 - 1999) "Windsor Castle, London" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society Great Britian block of four stamps issued May 7, 1980. Windsor Castle -- located about twenty miles west of London on the River Thames -- is perhaps England's most famous castle, due primarily to the fact that it is the British royal family's chief residence, as well as a stopping point for many heads of state on official visits to Britain. Originally built around 1070 by William the Conqueror, the castle was a Norman motte and bailey with a timber stockade atop a dirt mound. The Round Tower and stone walls were added by Henry II a century later. The artwork depicts the Round Tower, viewed from across the River Thames. Since Henry II's additions, successive monarchs have remodeled and added to the castle. The decorations which adorn much of the interior are the result of George IV's massive redecorations in the 1820's. The Grand Reception Room and Waterloo Chamber are among the most lavish and magnificent rooms in the castle. Used for State receptions and other formal affairs, they -- like others of the State Apartments -- are open for public viewing during most of the year. In 1475, Edward IV began the construction of St. George's Chapel, one of the most magnificent of English churches. In this chapel are buried many monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles I, and George VI. Today, Windsor Castle stands as an impressive and monumental reminder of the royal family's influence on British life throughout the centuries. In addition, it has remained a favorite residence among various monarchs, including Queen Victoria and the present Queen Elizabeth II. Image Size: 12.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 16 in. Unframed. Sir Hugh Casson (1910-1999) "Royal Opera House"

Sir Hugh Casson (United Kingdom, 1910 - 1999) "Royal Opera House, London" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society Great Britian 13p Royal Opera House stamp issued May 7, 1980. David Garrick, one of Britain's greatest actors, captured the intensity of Shakespeare's Hamlet for his London audience. Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, thrilled audiences with her rich soprano voice and, more recently, Rudolph Nureyev hypnotized ballet lovers with his grace and agility. Such events represent the rich and colorful history of the Royal Opera House. Sometimes called Covent Garden Theatre, this magnificent building was erected on a plot of land that once belonged to the monks of Westminster Abbey. King Henry VIII claimed the land and, in 1732, a theatre devotee named Mr. Rich, leased the site to build a playhouse which he called the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. Although a tragic fire destroyed the theatre in 1808, it was rebuilt that same year. In 1856, flames swept through the theatre once again. Architect, E.M. Barry refused to let London's theatre die. He salvaged the portico, a frieze and panels from the previous building and reconstructed the Royal Opera House as it stands today. During the late nineteenth century the theater fell on hard times, and for several years served only as an annex to the fruit and vegetable market next door. But, since 1950, the theatre has regained its grandeur and rebuilt its reputation. Its white, gold and scarlet interior is one of the most splendid in Europe and the world's most talented entertainers once again grace its stage. Image Size: 12.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 14 x 16 in. Sir Hugh Casson (1910 - 1999) "Buckingham Palace" Original First Day Cover Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society Great Britian 10p Buckingham Palace stamp issued May 7, 1980. At precisely 11:30 a.m. each day in London, England, crowds gather in front of the Queen's magnificent London residence, Buckingham Palace, for the Changing of the Guard. Regal guardsmen dressed in scarlet tunics, their heads covered by monstrous bearskin hats, march in precision, their feet stamping rhythmically to shouted orders. One-two, one-two, the red-coated sentries perform their daily ceremony honoring Britain's royal family when in residence at their London home. Buckingham Palace, set in the elegance of St. James Park, sits behind an imposing monument to Queen Victoria. The palace was built in 1703 by John Sheffield, the duke of Buckingham, as his private residence. Later in the C., George III bought the home for Queen Charlotte. But, it was George IV who turned the magnificent private residence into a royal palace. The king hired John Nash, one of London's most talented architects, to design a palace worthy of the nation's capitol. The project was costly and ambitious. Nash was accused of making improvident contracts and, after being fired, died a pauper in 1835. Edward Blore carried on his work and, in 1913, George V employed Aston Webb to bring the palace to completion. At this time, Webb designed and built the East Front of Buckingham Palace which now provides the imposing background for the Changing of the Guard. Overall Size: 18 x 19 in. Unframed. (B06024)

Sir Hugh Casson (United Kingdom, 1910 - 1999) "Albert Memorial". Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Westminster Collector's Society Great Britian 12p Albert Memorial stamp issued May 7, 1980. Princess Victoria became heir presumptive to the British throne when she was only eleven years old. Just seven years later, in 1837, the shy princess was crowned Queen. When coronation ceremonies concluded, advisers encouraged the eighteen-year-old queen to marry. Two years later, her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg, visited London and the young queen fell deeply in love with him. Victoria and Albert were married in 1840. The handsome prince became the center of Queen Victoria's life and, with their nine children, the royal couple led a full and happy life. But, in 1861, Prince Albert died of typhoid fever. The queen was inconsolable. Heartbroken, she withdrew from her court and family. Gradually, Queen Victoria returned to her duties but, each year, on the anniversary of Albert's death, her grief returned. Queen Victoria vowed that the nation would never forget her beloved Albert. To accomplish this she built the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. Sir George Gilbert Scott designed the memorial which represents the essence of High Victorian taste. To this day, the statue of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg sits under a richly ornamented Gothic canopy. The Prince is clutching the catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851 which he helped engineer. One hundred sixty-nine portrait sculptures march around the podium, allegorical figures crown the arches and bronze statues adorn the spire. Overall Size: 17 x 19 in. Unframed. (B06025)
