FROM THE LIBRARY OF ERNST WEIL (1891-1965) AUTOGRAPH WORKING MANUSCRIPT OF AN ESSAY ABOUT THE MOONS OF JUPITER, TOGETHER WITH A FAIR COPY OF THE ESSAY, REVISED AND CORRECTED BY HIM titled "Correction des moyens mouvemens des satellites de [Jupiter]", written in brown ink, in occasionally idiosyncratic French, unsigned, giving a comprehensive account of his own measurements of the orbit of the closest moon [Io] to Jupiter, from 1652 until 1680, and those made by Galileo in 1610, admitting to some errors he made in a paper in 1680, giving details of more recent measurements of all four Galilean moons, the manuscript including several autograph revisions, deletions and insertions, especially towards the end, relating to his investigations in 1688 and 1689, emending a number of dates and calculations, dated within the text ("...cette année 1689..."), 11 pages, 4to, in a single gathering, 1688-1689--together with a contemporary working manuscript of Cassini's essay, presumably by his assistant or pupil, written on similar paper, with Cassini's autograph additions and alterations, including four lines of text added by him at the end ("Cette annee 1688..."), 8 pages, 4to, 1688; 19 pages in all, 4to (22.5 x 17cms), all with watermark "P.Buisson" and a coat of arms, some creasing at lower margins, a few perforations through oxidization of the ink

MARS -- CASSINI, Giovanni Domenico (1625-1712). De Periodo quotidianae revolutionis Martis. Bologna: by H.H. de Ducius, 1666. [With:] -- De aliis Romanis observationibus macularum Martis. Bologna: by H.H. de Ducius, 1666. [And:] -- Tabulae Quotidianae Revolutionis Macularum Iovis. Rome: by Fabio de Falco, 1665. 3 works, each a single sheet folded once (305 x 220mm). The second item with an engraved plate of telescopic observations and two small printed correction slips tipped on. (The first two items with early, shallow folding creases perhaps for mailing, the first item with a repair in the bottom margin, some spotting, some browning). Disbound. THREE RARE PAMPHLETS BY CASSINI on the rate of rotation of Mars and Jupiter, including his 'importantissimi opus' (Riccardi) announcing the length of the Martian day. Cassini focused his telescope on the macula, or dark spots of Mars to determine the position of the planet's polar cap and period of rotation. RARE: ABPC records no copies at auction in over 35 years. WorldCat apparently locates just one copy of De Periodo at the Bibliotheque nationale de France; and apparently no copy of De aliis Romanis. Riccardi I, 277-8. With another: an incomplete copy of Martis circa axem proprium revolubilis observationes Bononiae (Bologna: 1666). (4)
