      Jul. 19, 2014

William Cary oil of Teddy Roosevelt Storming San Juan Hill

      Est: $2,000 - $2,500

William De La Montagne Cary (1840 - 1922) oil on canvas painting, Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders Storming San Juan Hill. Signed lower right corner, "W M Cary". This was the decisive battle of the Spanish American War. Cary depicts the American troops under fire as they surge up San Juan Hill, with a trench and block house at the top of the summit. Teddy Roosevelt is depicted in the center middle ground leading the charge with pistol in hand. Sight: 14" x 10". Framed: 18 1/2" x 14 1/2". Early 20th century. Biography: Cary learned to draw from his father and as a youth was apprenticed to an engraver. He had a long and successful career as a New York City-based illustrator for Harper's Weekly, Leslie's, Scribner's and other publications, concentrating primarily on American Western scenes. He and Theodore Roosevelt were personal friends and, at one point, neighbors in New York; this piece was likely done as a private gift or commission rather than for publication.

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

William De La Montagne Cary American, 1840-1922 The Hunting Party Oil on canvas 13 x 18 inches Provenance: Estate of Mrs. Loretta Camp Frey, NJ Exhibited: Pittsburgh, PA , Duquesne Club, Art of the American West, Apr. 13-May 19, 2007, no. 11 Literature: Art of the American West. Pittsburgh, PA: Duquesne Club, 2007, p. 16, (no. 11) During the three trips he took to the Western frontier in 1861, 1864, and 1874, Cary created sketches of Native American life and pioneer settlements that were given recognition for their carefully observed details. By contrast with the aggressive encounters in the paintings of Remington, Cary focused on peaceful interactions between settlers and Indians. In The Hunting Party, the two tribesmen proceed warily but anticipate a safe return before sundown, as their home in the distance is visible from the forest in which they are camouflaged. The sunset in such works was often a trope for a civilization whose future was believed to be in decline. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

WILLIAM DE LA MONTAGNE CARY (American, 1840-1922) Landscape Watercolor on paper 17 x 37 inches (43.2 x 94.0 cm) Following in the footsteps of George Catlin and Karl Bodmer, New York magazine illustrator William de la Montagne Cary documented the virgin territory of the Northern Plains Indians before the completion in the late 1860s of the transcontinental railroad. In 1861, Cary traveled on a hunting expedition along the Missouri River from New Mexico to Montana, experiencing along the way colorful exploits, including a boat fire and near capture by a Crow Indian tribe. He then returned westward to Washington in 1874 with a railroad survey team on assignment from Harper's Weekly. Cary's voluminous sketches from these two trips formed the basis of his art, both his oil paintings as well as his magazine illustrations. He occasionally utilized a panoramic format for his landscapes, as in this delicately rendered watercolor, which recalls his images of a Crow encampment along the Upper Missouri. The Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art in Tulsa possesses over 100 works by Cary.
