EVELYN RUMSEY CARY (1855-1924) WOMAN SUFFRAGE. Circa 1905. 41 1/8x23 1/4 inches, 105x59 cm. The Munro & Harford Co. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restored losses in margins and corners, some affecting text. An extremely rare and extraordinary Women's Suffrage Poster derived from a painting that Cary completed in 1905. Evoking a passage from Proverbs 31:31, the sinuous Art Nouveau image portrays a woman literally growing forth from her roots in the ground, an organic part of the earth, with leaves and fruit blossoming from her fingertips. It is an elegant and thoughtful visual analogy to both woman as Earth Goddess and producer. This image was so popular it appeared on flyers, pamphlets and other Suffragist collateral material. Women finally received the right to vote in America as a result of the passage of the 19th amendment, in 1920. Paret 92.
