Mario Carreño Sold at Auction Prices

Poster painter, Painter, Illustrator, b. 1913 - d. 1999

(b Havana, Cuba, 1913; d Santiago, Chile, 2000) Cuban painter. Mario Carreño’s work reflects a cross-cultural dialogue between vanguard modernist practices of the first half of the twentieth century and a unique subject matter rooted in the Caribbean’s rich syncretic cultural heritage. The precocious Carreño entered Havana’s prestigious Academia de San Alejandro at the age of twelve. His education continued as he traveled extensively throughout most of the 1930s and early 1940s, spending brief sojourns in Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, and later New York shortly after the start of World War II. As a member of Cuba’s second generation of vanguard painters, including such noted figures as René Portocarrero, Mariano Rodríguez, and Cundo Bermúdez, Carreño shared his contemporaries' interest in adapting and infusing the new international style with aspects of their personal and regional circumstances. In their quest to create an art that straddled both of these worlds and a nascent sense of national identity constructed around notions of afrocubanismo, these artists borrowed from a number of sources including European modern art (best exemplified by Picasso’s primitivism), contemporary Cuban literature and music, and Cuban colonial and nineteenth-century art. ABSTRACT MIXED MEDIA PAINTING BY MARIO CARRENO

          Est: $100 - $150

Mario Carreno, Cuban, 1913 to 1999, mixed media painting on canvas depicting an abstract composition, 1956. Signed and dated, lower right. Framed. Mario Carreno is known for Abstract, modernist figure painting, illustration, murals. A modernist figurative Latin American painter and magazine illustrator, whose clients included House and Garden, Interiors and Norte, Mario Carreno was born in Havana but lived for extended periods of time in New York City and finally in Chile. He studied art in his native country at San Alejandro Academy; in Madrid, Spain beginning 1931 at the San Fernando School. There he met Pablo Neruda and his circle of intellectual friends including Federico Lorca and Rafael Alberti. To earn a living, he worked as a graphic designer, but those were tough times because of the impending Spanish Civil War. In 1935, he went to Mexico, where he worked with what he described as the great muralists including Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros and Jose Orozco. Influenced by these strong nationalists, he began injecting his own Latin American heritage into his artwork. One of a kind artwork.

          Est: $150 - $10,000

175225 AFTER MARIO CARREÑO ORIGINAL DANCING OIL PAINTING Mario Carreño (1913-1999) inspired painting. Oil painting features two afro-dancers. Carreño was an important early advocate ofabstraction in Cuba. His paintings of the later 1940s and ‘50s moved away from the lush exuberance of his earlier, more figurative work, drawing out the universality of Cuba’s vernacular imagery through plastic color andgeometric forms. A vibrant example from this period, Untitled explores rich tonalities of green and yellow that frame stylized, totemic forms within a flattened pattern of abstraction.Size: 14.25 X 22.5". 20.75 X 28.75" Frame. Condition: See images. Very fine.

ABSTRACT CUBAN CRAYON PAINTING BY MARIO CARRENO COA

          Est: $100 - $150

Mario Carreno, Cuban, 1913 to 1999, crayon painting on paper depicting an abstract composition, 1956. Signed and dated, lower right. Provenance: the private collection, Habana. Completed with a certificate of authenticity of Louis Lastra Fine Art, signed by Luis E Lastra, Historian and Art Critic, associate member I.S.A., date of examination October 22, 2001, date of certificate october 22, 2001. Mario Carreno is known for Abstract, modernist figure painting, illustration, murals. A modernist figurative Latin-American painter and magazine illustrator, whose clients included House and Garden, Interiors and Norte, Mario Carreno was born in Havana but lived for extended periods of time in New York City and finally in Chile. In 1935, he went to Mexico, where he worked with what he described as the great muralists including Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros and José Orozco. Influenced by these strong nationalists, he began injecting his own Latin American heritage into his artwork. One of a kind artwork.

MARIO JUAN CARREÑO Y MORALES (Havana, Cuba, 1913 - Santiago de Chile, 1999). "The Champion", 1932. Relief on wood.

          Est: €6,000 - €8,000

MARIO JUAN CARREÑO Y MORALES (Havana, Cuba, 1913 - Santiago de Chile, 1999). "The Champion", 1932. Relief on wood. Homage to José Raúl Capablanca, world chess champion. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. With certificate of authenticity from the author's widow in 2019. Measurements: 19 x 17 cm. In this bas-relief, Mario Carreño has represented the Cuban chess champion with a deliberately rough and synthetic stroke, influenced by the language of comics, but also by primitivism as it was revisited by the avant-garde. Also in his painting, he would develop a personal line inspired by primitivism, muralism and popular art. Carreño was a Cuban-Chilean painter, winner of Chile's National Art Prize in 1982. He studied art at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana (1925-1926), where he was taught by Antonio Rodriguez Morey, but after conflicts with some academics, disappointed, he dropped out and was accepted first as a retoucher and then as an illustrator at the Diario de la Marina. In 1932 he traveled to Europe to continue his studies in Graphic Arts at the San Fernando School in Madrid, but four years later he left Spain due to the Spanish Civil War. In 1934, he met the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, with whom he became a great friend. From Madrid, Carreño went to Mexico, where he came into contact with the main representatives of muralism: Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Rufino Tamayo. He spent a brief period in Cuba and in 1937 he returned to Europe, this time to Paris, where he entered the Julien Academy and was a student of the painter Jean Souverbie. Two years later he had an exhibition at the famous Berheim-Jeune gallery, which consolidated him as an artist. He left Europe again with the outbreak of the Second World War and settled in New York. During the forties he spent long stays in his homeland, and in 1942 he was visited in Havana by the Mexican David Alfaro Siqueiros, with whom he painted a mural. In 1946 he became a professor of painting at The New School for Social Research in New York, which marked the beginning of an outstanding teaching career, which he developed in Havana, where between 1951 and 1954 he taught modern art at the San Alejandro School, and later in Chile. At that time he also began to write art commentaries in a weekly column for the magazines Carteles and Noticias de Arte. Carreño traveled to Chile for the first time in 1948, invited to exhibit in Santiago, at the Sala del Pacífico. Later, in 1956, he visited Chile again to teach courses on the evolution of contemporary art at the University of Chile, and two years later he settled there permanently. In 1958, the same year of his arrival, he gave art courses at the Summer School of the Federico Santa Maria Technical University in Valparaiso, and the following year he gave a series of classes entitled Evolution of Contemporary Art at the University of Concepcion. In 1959 he also founded, together with other artists such as Nemesio Antúnez, the Escuela de Arte de la Católica, where he taught painting workshops until 1969, when he was appointed deputy director of the school. That same year he was granted Chilean citizenship and the following year he assumed the chair of History of Contemporary Painting in Latin America. His works are in a number of museums in the United States, Latin America and Europe, as well as in important private collections around the world.
