Rosalba Carriera was one of Antonio Balestra's students in Venice. After starting out in miniature painting, she specialized in portraits with pastel pencils and became very famous throughout Europe. She celebrated successes in Paris, Vienna, Parma and Modena. Her virtuoso pastels were groundbreaking for Rococo. The two portraits of Rosalba Carriera are characterized by their delicate, sensual and lively design and their refined coloring.
