      Meriva Carpenter (American, 1802-1887) Two Works: Miniature Portraits of Mrs. Hannah Carpenter (née Peasley) 1842 watercolor and gouache on ivory and sixth plate daguerreotype the painted portrait inscribed in pen, Mrs Hannah Carpenter painted by her sister in law Mrs. Meriva Carpenter in 1842 Hannah daughter of Amos and Sarah (Leicester) Peasly was born Oct' 17th 1800 in Epping Rockingham Co. New Hampshire Settled in DeRuyter Madison Co. N.Y. in 1817 was married to Delford son of Doct' Ruggles and Juliana (Paines) Carpenter in Sept. 16th 1842 was widowed Sept 30th 1843, reverse of the paper backing housed together in an embossed leather case with detached spine, along with a lock of Hannah's hair 2 7/8 x 2 1/4 inches; 3 3/4 x 3 1/8 inches (cased). together with a sixth plate tintype portrait of a family. 2 x 2 1/2 inches. This lot is located in Cincinnati. Hannah Carpenter's husband, Delford, was born in Ellington, Connecticut on March 18, 1800. Contrary to the written inscription on the back of the portrait, he is listed as having passed away on August 30, 1843. There are no census records documenting their union, as he passed away within, or just over, one year of their marriage. Similarly, there is no record of when Hannah passed away, but the 1855 New York Census shows that she was residing with her parents at that time. Another miniature attributed to Meriva Carpenter is located in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC (accession no. 1936.12).
