Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1838 - d. 1917

(b Lille, France, 1838; d Paris, 1917) French Painter. Carolus-Duran studied at the Academy in Lille with the sculptor Augustin-Phidias Cadet de Beaupre who taught him how to sketch. At age 15, he began a two-year apprenticeship in the studio of one of David's former pupils, Francois Souchon. In 1853 he moved to Paris where he took life classes at the Academie Suisse. During this time Carolus-Duran made the acquaintance of Fantin-Latour, Courbet, Manet, and Monet, whose portrait he painted in 1867. After traveling to Spain, Italy, and Brussels, Carolus-Duran opened a studio in Paris in 1872. Many students were not only drawn to his atelier due to Carolus-Durans' success and popularity, but also numerous expatriate artists, who loathed the stringent and conservative training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, opted for the supportive atmosphere of Duran's atelier. The American artist John Singer Sargent, for example, became one of Duran's star pupils and close friends. Sargent created a reverent portrait of his mentor and dedicated it affectionately to him (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, MA). Carolus-Duran was a founding member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and was the president in 1898. He was named a chevalier of the French Legion of Honor in 1872. In 1905 he became the director of the French Academy in Rome. (Credit: Sotheby’s, New York, La Belle Epoque Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, May 3, 2000, Lot 227)

BIOGRAPHY: Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran (1838 - 1917) studied art through a series of apprenticeships, but his paintings were also greatly shaped by time spent copying the Old Masters in the Louvre. He spent most of the 1860s in Italy and Spain, where he was influenced by the realistic and often somber portraits by the Spanish artist Diego Velazquez. After his return to Paris, Carolus-Duran opened a studio where he taught many aspiring artists, among them the American painter John Singer Sargent. Carolus-Duran was a founding member of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (The National Society of Fine Arts), which broke with the more traditional government-run Salon system, and was also the director of the prestigious Academie de France in Rome.

        Feb. 02, 2023

        Charles Auguste Emile Duran (Carolus-Duran)

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Charles Auguste Emile Duran, known as Carolus-Duran (French, 1837-1917), "Portrait of a Gentleman, likely James Biddle Eustis (1834-1899)", 1898, oil on canvas, signed, dated and inscribed "Paris" upper right, "Paul Foinet, Paris" canvas stamp en verso, "Maple's Depository" labels on stretcher, 24 in. x 19 3/4 in., framed, overall 28 1/8 in. x 23 7/8 in. x 2 1/4 in. Provenance: Collection of Minnie Ewan Eustis, Paris; thence by descent. Note: While the definitive identity of this sitter remains a mystery, there are clues in the Eustis family history and a reputed relationship with the artist, Carolus-Duran, that point to United States senator from Louisiana and Ambassador to France James Biddle Eustis (1834-1899) as the likely subject. The portrait of this distinguished gentleman hung for many years in the Paris residence of Minnie Ewan Eustis, who claimed a husband by the name of Charles M. Eustis, born of American parents in Bath, England. However, no record can be found on this personage or of a marriage between the two. It is believed Ms. Eustis, an opera singer by profession, took the name of a patron, James Biddle Eustis, who was a fan of classical music with a daughter, Marie Eustis, a contemporary of Minnie Ewan Eustis. More evidence that indicates James Biddle Eustis is the sitter for the portrait are records that the sitter and artist were acquainted and served on the commission for the “Prix de Paris,” a joint Franco-American initiative to award an annual stipend to young American students of art and music studying in Paris. According to Dr. William Hauptman, a preeminent Carolus-Duran scholar, although there is no record of the sitter in this work: “There are indices that put [Eustis] and the painter together and in art historical terms that is quite a great deal. Their meetings in Paris and their apparently working together would certainly have induced Eustis to have his portrait painted by Carolus Duran whose reputation at the time was huge.” Hauptman also states that Carolus Duran “…was known to flatter his sitters, sometimes making them appear younger in years.” This fact is another significant justification since the portrait appears to be a man in his late forties, while Eustis would have been sixty-four in 1898. Regardless of the sitter’s identification, the canvas offered here is indicative of the beautiful and detailed portraits Charles Auguste Émile Durand painted of the French, British and American aristocracy and upper-class society in the late 19th century. His popularity was unquestioned, and his influence can clearly be seen in the work of his most well-known student, John Singer Sargent.

(As shown in the handwritten collection sticker on the back) Enrique Navarro Viola (Buenos Aires, 1860 -1941) was an important Argentinian businessman and lawyer. The Navarro Viola Foundation, opened by his daughters in 1973, continues to this day. - Private collection, Barcelona. A celebrated 19th century French painter, who was lucky enough to be successful in his lifetime. At the age of eight he was enrolled in the Municipal Art School of Lille. At the beginning of his career he seems to have been very influenced by Courbet. In 1855 the family moved to Paris, where Durand met the critic Zacharie Astruch, who introduced him to Courbet and Manet, with whom he became great friends. He began a very successful career. In 1861 he participated in the Salon, in 1861 he won the Wicar prize, and used the winnings to install himself in Italy, a decisive move as there he saw Velazquez´ portrait of “Pope Innocent X” which started off his veneration for the painter. In the 1866 Salon he won a medal, which meant that he could travel to Spain, where he stayed for three years. The self portait on show at the Prado comes from this period. In 1870 he was decorated with the Legion of Honour, and in 1874 Carolus-Duran was at the apex of his success, exhibiting some forty paintings at the “Cercle des Mirlitons” which was a great social occasion. He received a commission from the State for the Musée du Luxembourg, which is currently kept at the Louvre. He continued to receive oficial recognition and devoted himself to female portraiture. In 1889, alongside Meissonier and Puvis de Chavannes he founded the Societé Nationale des Beaux Arts, which, like the Salon, was very liberal, did not award prizes and allowed all artists to exhibit. In 1904 he became a member of the Academie des Beaux Arts and became Director of the Academy of France in Rome, occupying this position until 1913. One of his most beautiful paintings "Lady with the glove" is kept at the Musée d’Orsay 71 x 45 cm.

CHARLES EMILE AUGUSTE CAROLUS-DURAN (FRENCH, 1838-1917) Portrait of Mrs Harry Vane Milbank, neé Alice Sidonie Van den Bergh signed and dated 'Carolus-Duran./Paris - Mars 1877.' (upper left) oil on canvas 117.5 x 94cm (46 1/4 x 37in). Provenance: From the sitter to her son, Albert de Belleroche (French 1864-1944) Thence by descent The present lot portrays Alice Sidonie Van den Berg, daughter of Desire Baruch of Brussels, and a prominent socialite in London and Paris. Alice hosted great parties in both cities and was a good friend of both the Impératrice Eugénie, Napoleon 3rd's wife, in Paris and the Marquess of Queensberry in London. Described as having an 'almost legendary beauty', Alice's first marriage, to Edmund Charles, Marquis de Belleroche produced a son Albert, who went on to become a celebrated painter. But the marriage ended unhappily, and in 1871, Alice married Harry Vane Milbank, the nephew and heir-to-be of the Duke of Cleveland and a celebrated duellist, huntsman and adventurer; he was also an inveterate gambler. The family moved to Paris, where many great writers and artists were frequent visitors to Alice's salons, notably the writer and humourist Oscar Wilde and the great American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). It was at one such soiree that Albert de Belleroche met Sargent, who was so impressed by his drawings that he convinced the young man to join the atelier of Carolus-Duran. Both Carolus-Duran and Sargent painted portraits of Alice; in 1882 Harry commissioned Carolus-Duran to paint his wife, while Sargent painted Alice a number of times, including a full-length portrait (which Richard Ormond dates to circa 1883-4), which is dedicated to Belleroche (see Sotheby's New York, May 24, 2001, lot 33). The present lot pre-dates these portrayals of Alice Milbank. By the time it was painted in 1877, Carolus-Duran had established a well-regarded atelier in Paris. His methods were highly influenced by the 17th Century master Diego Velázquez (Spanish 1599-1660), who Carolus-Duran believed to be the 'most complete' artist 1, saying of him 'he is the master who has taught me better than anyone else to say the utmost possible with the fewest possible words.'2 Carolus-Duran's technique placed the emphasis on colour and form, using direct and painterly brushwork, in preference to smooth blending. As H. Barbara Weinberg notes, Carolus-Duran's canvases are 'painted quite broadly in even tones of flesh tint, and stood side by side like pieces of a mosaic, without fusion of their adjacent edges. No brushing of the edge of the hair into the face was permitted, no conventional bounding of eyes and features with lines.' 3 Carolus-Duran described his own work as an attempt to 'go straight to nature...my own art may be summed up in two words: I seek to give the impression of things which touch and surround me'. 4 This is echoed by Eugène Montrosier, a contemporary writing in 1876, who wrote that 'the grand success of Carolus-Duran is easily explained. He makes living beings, and he makes them thus because he so sees them. One feels that when he has a subject under his eyes, he scrutinizes the very soul. With a penetrating look he seizes the dominant passion, and this become the point of support for the whole work. With such a painter there are no trickeries, no feints, no implied meanings.' 5 1 Rowland Strong, 'Carolus-Duran–A Visit To His Studio In Paris', The New York Times, March 17, 1900 2 Rollin Hartt, as quoted in Current Literature, A Magazine of Record and Review, Vol.XXXVIII, New York, page 368 3 H. Dans la partie inférieure droite de notre toile a été ébauchée par l'artiste un personnage sonnant du cors, celui là même que l'on retrouve à la droite du char de Bacchus dans la composition définitive.
