Circle of Francesco Capella, Italian 1711/14-1784- The Incredulity of Saint Thomas; oil on canvas, bears label inscribed 'G.B. Piazzetta' attached to the reverse of the frame, 86.7 x 71.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Capella was a student of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754), and was heavily influenced by the latter's compositions. Capella produced a number of intimate, dramatically-lit Biblical scenes, such as his painting of Salomon worshipping idols which sold at Finarte, Milan, on 16 May 2007 (lot 61). The present work also recalls the artist's depiction of the Madonna and Child which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 8 December 2016 (lot 32), with the colourful fabric of the sitters' clothing in the present work, as in Capella's paintings, gesturing towards the Venetian circle in which the artist was working.

Olio su tela 60 x 45 cm Tra le diverse opere citabili per un confronto attributivo mettiamo in risalto la vicinanza con la testa del Beato Guido Vagnotelli della pala Immacolata Concezione con il Beato G. Vagnotelli, Santa Margherita e anime del Purgatorio, e il profilo di San Gregorio, della serie dei Dottori della Chiesa, conservati nella chiesa dei SS. Nazario e Celso di Urgnano. Fu allievo e collaboratore del Piazzetta fino alla morte del maestro avvenuta nel 1754. Già qualche anno prima iniziò la sua attività indipendente, nell’anno 1749, tramite il conte Giacomo Carrara, iniziarono le commissioni a Bergamo, che gli valsero molti riconoscimenti in città, tali che lo indussero a lasciare Venezia e a stabilirsi, nel 1757, definitivamente nella città lombarda. Pur saldamente legato al suo maestro, egli arricchì la sua arte pittorica facendo proprie le influenze dei maestri veneziani: inserì elementi luminosi di Sebastiano Ricci, una certa virtuosa fluidità materica caratteristica di Francesco Guardi e la nuova grandiosità scenica di Giambattista Tiepolo. Mentre deciso è quel naturalismo sincero di gusto neobarocco che il pittore esprime riprendendo il filo di un arcaico tenebrismo, qui risolto con precisione di disegno e una stesura distesa, la stessa che percepiamo nelle sue opere più mature.
