Robert Capa was a renowned Hungarian-born American photojournalist and war photographer. He was born on October 22, 1913, in Budapest, Hungary, and his birth name was Endre Ern? Friedmann. Capa is best known for his powerful and iconic images of conflict, particularly his coverage of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Capa began his career as a photographer in the 1930s, capturing scenes from everyday life in Paris and becoming associated with the emerging genre of photojournalism. He co-founded the Magnum Photos agency in 1947, which became one of the most prominent and influential photography agencies in the world.Capa's work during the Spanish Civil War, where he documented the struggle against Francisco Franco's forces, gained him international recognition. His most famous photograph from this period, """"The Falling Soldier,"""" captured a Republican soldier at the moment of his death and became an iconic image of war. During World War II, Capa worked as a war correspondent and photographer, covering significant events such as the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. He was the only civilian photographer to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day, capturing intense and intimate images of the conflict. Throughout his career, Capa covered numerous wars and conflicts, including the Chinese Civil War, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the First Indochina War. He had a unique ability to capture the humanity and emotions of individuals caught in the chaos of war, earning him widespread acclaim. Sadly, Robert Capa's life was cut short on May 25, 1954, when he stepped on a landmine while covering the First Indochina War in Vietnam. His contributions to photojournalism and war photography continue to inspire generations of photographers, and his images remain powerful symbols of the human experience in times of conflict. Measures 9.25 x 7. Mounted to linen. """

Robert Capa, Dior Model, 'Capa's World in Color' Photograph

Robert Capa, Dior Model, 'Capa's World in Color' Photograph Robert Capa, authentication hand stamped seal on the back A Dior model, wearing a ‘New Look' long skirt. Place Vendôme, 1st arrondissement, Paris, France. 1948. 6 x 6 in. (15.2 x 15.2 cm.), Frame: 9 3/4 x 8 in. (24.8 x 20.3 cm.) Approx Robert Capa — near-exclusively known for his black and white photographs — first used color film in 1938 while covering the Sino-Japanese War. In a letter to his friend Peter Koester he asked to be sent ‘12 rolls of Kodachrome with all instruction; whether special filters are needed, etc. — in short, all I should know…' The only color images of Capa's to have been published from the war were of the burning of Hankou, of which Life ran four in its October 17 issue. Capa photographed with color during the first years of World War Two, and resumed using the medium after the war's end. As Cynthia Young wrote, ‘The idea that Robert Capa photographed in color, and not just occasionally, but regularly after 1941 until his death in 1954, is surprising — even shocking — to some.' This image — not only shot in color, but an example of his peace-time fashion work, demonstrates a near-unseen aspect of Capa's decades of work. Text informed by Cynthia Young, "Capa's World in Color,"in Capa in Color (International Center of Photography / DelMonico Books-Prestel, 2014). Robert Capa is one of the best photographers of the 20th as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Elliott Erwitt, Annie Leibovitz or Robert Capa, he was considered an icon of 20th century culture like Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons or Banksy. ROBERT CAPA (Budapest, 1913 - Vietnam, 1954). Untitled, 1942. Gelatin silver photograph. With stamp on the reverse: Robert Capa -British News Service. Museum glass. Size: 17 x 23.7 cm; 37 x 43.5 cm (frame). Hungarian war photographer and photojournalist, as well as the companion and professional partner of the photographer Gerda Taro. Robert Capa is considered by some to be the greatest war photographer. Capa fled political repression in Hungary as a teenager, and moved to Berlin, where he enrolled in university. He witnessed the rise of Hitler, which led him to move to Paris, where he met and began working with Gerta Pohorylle. Together they worked under the alias Robert Capa and became photojournalists. Although she contributed to much of the early work, she quickly created her own alias 'Gerda Taro' and they began to publish their work separately. She subsequently covered five wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Second World War in Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the First Indochina War, with her photos published in major magazines and newspapers. During his career, he risked his life on numerous occasions, being the only civilian photographer to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy and the liberation of Paris. His friends and colleagues included Ernest Hemingway, Irwin Shaw, John Steinbeck and director John Huston. In 1947, for his work recording World War II on film, US General Dwight D. Eisenhower awarded Capa the Medal of Freedom. That same year, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos in Paris. The organisation was the first cooperative agency for independent photographers worldwide.

ROBERT CAPA (Budapest, 1913 - Vietnam, 1954). "These Russians".1944. Silver gelatin photograph. With stamp on the back: Robert Capa -British News Service. Museum glass. Size: 18,5 x 20,5 cm; 37 x 43,5 cm (frame).
