YVONNE CANÚ ( Meknes, Morocco, 1921 - 2008). "Port of Saint Tropez". Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Certificate attached. Measurements: 33.5 x 55.5 cm, 45.5 x 67 cm (frame). Although Pointillism is considered as the continuation of Impressionism, the conception of shapes and volumes is far from it. In Pointillism, shapes are conceived within a geometry of pure masses, being her paintings perfect examples of order and clarity. Yvonne Canú, through the adoption of tiny dot-like brushstrokes, manages to accumulate, even on small surfaces, a great variety of colors and tones, each of which corresponds to one of the elements that contribute to the appearance of the object. At a given distance these tiny particles are optically mixed and the result produces a much greater intensity of color than any mixture of pigments. In this sense, their studies of light and color surpass those made by any of the Impressionists, but they also encountered greater difficulties. With more knowledge and a more disciplined eye, Canú found all the hallmarks of the light spectrum, as well as a way to lighten or darken a given hue in relation to the simultaneous hallmarks produced by the surrounding colors. Yvonne Canú was a French painter, considered part of Neo-Impressionism, who used Pointillism techniques in her works. Born of French parents, she began her studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, but they were interrupted by World War II. The future pointillist met with artists such as Élisée Maclet and Tsuguharu Foujita, who introduced her to landscape painting and the principles of impressionism. She later attended the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere with Ossip Zadkine. Yvonne Canu began to present her works after the end of World War II, but it was not until 1955 that she finally came to neo-Impressionism. Canu made this decision under the impression of the painting "Un dimanche après-midi à l'le de la Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat, one of the pioneers of this trend. Yvonne Canu (French, 1921-2008). Oil on canvas painting titled "St. Tropez" depicting ships in a harbor in pastel pointillism. Signed along the lower right; further signed and titled along the verso. Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection. Lot Essay: Yvonne Canu spent her early years in Morocco before attending the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. After serving as a military nurse in World War II, she returned to Paris to join the group of Montmartre artists including Francois Gall, Elisee Maclet, and Tsuguharu Fouijta. Additionally, she studied at the Acadmie de la Grand Chaumiere alongside Ossip Zadkine. While she studied plein-air landscape painting, impressionism, and cubism, her greatest influence would prove to be Georges Seurat. From 1955 onwards she devoted her works to Pointillism. Following the steps of Paul Signac, she moved to St. Tropez where she found inspiration just as Matisse, Bonnard, and Marquet had. While she occasionally visited Paris as well as other Mediterranean ports, she spent the majority of the remainder of her life painting in St. Tropez.

Après la guerre, elle fréquente les milieux de Montmartre et rencontre des artistes tels que François Gall, Élisée Maclet et Tsuguharu Foujita, qui lui font découvrir la peinture de paysage en plein air et les principes de l'impressionnisme et dans les années suivantes, elle est touche au cubisme, sous l'influence d'Ossip Zadkine. L'arrivée définitive au néo-impressionnisme date de 1955 quand Yvonne Canu admire pour la première fois le chef-d'œuvre de Georges Seurat, "Un dimanche après midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte". Depuis lors, elle devient interprète de la technique et du style pointilliste, prolongeant avec bonheur l'héritage de ce mouvement. C'est de cette période que date cette toile peinte par Canu à Saint-Tropez lors de l'un de ses nombreux séjours dans la petite cité varoise.

Notes: When in the mid-1950s Yvonne Canu encountered Georges Seurat's Un Dimanche Apres-Midi a L'ile de la Grande Jatte, she was astounded, and it changed the trajectory of her career as an artist. Nearly half a century after Seurat's early death, Canu decided to dedicate herself exclusively to Pointillism and adopted the technique for all her work. As a Neo-Impressionist, she further expanded upon the theories of Divisionism - the separation of each color into individual dots that interact optically to produce the illusion of more vibrant and luminous hues. Though heavily influenced by Seurat, Canu's works are distinctly modern. Her fearless technique utilized pure color and blocky brushstrokes to boldly capture the atmosphere of the seascapes and port scenes she is so well known for. In Brittany Coast, the patches of color blend together playfully to produce a representation of the waves moving and the sunlight shining, illustrating her creative freedom and confidence. Despite the whimsical nature of the work, there is also a high level of precision - each block of pigment is placed painstakingly in order to achieve the optical mixing that Canu never stopped pursuing. Her style is undeniably avant-garde and modern when the high intensity color, playful brushstrokes, and themes of fearlessness are considered, setting Canu apart from the Pointillists and Divisionists of the 19th century who galvanized her.

A pointillist oil on canvas painting by Yvonne Canu (French, 1921 - 2007). Signed by the artist lower right, also signed and titled verso. Housed in a richly decorated gilt wood and gesso frame. Yvonne Canu was a French painter who followed the influences of the pointillists such as Georges Seurat. She belongs to an interesting trend of French twentieth-century artists who looked to and expanded upon the theories of so-called divisionist artists of the late 19th century. She studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and gained the most acknowledgment for her work after the Second World War. Her work often depicts coastal and harbour scenes.
