          • Gold and quartz pendant - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984)
            Dec. 06, 2022

Gold and quartz pendant - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984)

            Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Gold and quartz pendant - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984) 18k yellow gold and citrine quartz. Signed "CANNILLA" and hallmarked "750" and "22 Roma". The artist's jewellery production can be placed within the research strand of artist's jewellery developed in Italy especially after the Second World War, thanks to a number of jewellers including Mario Masenza (Rome, 1913-1985) and his brothers Danilo (Rome, 1934-1995) and Massimo Fumanti (Rome, 1936) in Rome and Giancarlo Montebello (Milan, 1941) in Milan. In post-World War II Rome, Masenza opened the doors of his jewellery shop in Via del Corso to the artists of the time, who could translate their poetics into formal declinations of rare executive prestige. Mazenza conceived the idea, completely unprecedented for the Italian panorama, of bringing together the world of jewellery with that of art, thus involving contemporary artists; in particular, he used Dederico Gherardi's goldsmith's workshop to make the jewellery of sculptors such as Franco Cannilla. An artist born in Caltagirone on 13 February 1911, he died in Rome at the end of 1984, he attended the local ceramics school; his language approached a progressive abstraction of the plastic form, concretised in the 1950s in a search for proportional harmony through the use of the module, for the creation of concrete art objects in relation also to new industrial materials. Cannilla's goldsmith production began in the late 1940s and saw both abstract motifs and more concrete and symbolic themes represented, such as figurative jewellery with biblical repertoire and female figures. In the 1960s, he experimented with an abstract yet tense language, which in the jewellery is translated into developments and interweaving of filaments sprinkled with gems and diamonds. In the pendant, the artist transfers the purity and geometric rigour of his artistic productions of the late 1960s, at that time an exponent of the Neo-Concretism trend, into gold. The pendant is conceived through horizontal and vertical lines that intersect each other, some of which are highlighted at the ends with coloured stones, creating harmony and rhythm to the composition. At the centre, the fulcrum of the composition, is set a large rectangular quartz. Item condition grading: ***** excellent. Accompanied by Giorgio Tempesti's expertise.

          • Salt water cultured pearl gold diamonds emeralds necklace - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984)
            Dec. 06, 2022

Salt water cultured pearl gold diamonds emeralds necklace - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984)

            Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Salt water cultured pearl gold diamonds emeralds necklace - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984) 18k white gold clasp, brilliant-cut diamonds totalling approximately 0.30 ct and emeralds. Signed "CANNILLA" and hallmarked "750" and "22 Roma". The artist's jewellery production can be placed within the research strand of artist's jewellery developed in Italy especially after the Second World War, thanks to a number of jewellers including Mario Masenza (Rome, 1913-1985) and the brothers Danilo (Rome, 1934-1995) and Massimo Fumanti (Rome, 1936) in Rome and Giancarlo Montebello (Milan, 1941) in Milan. In the 1960s, he experimented with an abstract yet tension-rich language, which in the jewellery is translated into developments and interweaving of filaments sprinkled with gems and diamonds. The double strand of pearls ends with a clasp characterised by a design with soft geometries, in which three diamonds are set in the centre and groups of small emeralds at the ends. As a whole, the design follows a sinus movement, marked by the repetition of the module echoing an almond alternating with rigid elements; this play of alternations, of solids and voids, gives rhythm and movement to the composition. Length x width: 3.7 x 2.8 cm. Weight approx. 26 g Item condition grading: ***** excellent. Accompanied by Giorgio Tempesti's expertise.

Yellow gold and diamond bracelet and earring set - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984)

            Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Yellow gold and diamond bracelet and earring set - 1960s, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984) 18K cast yellow gold and brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 4.90 ct. In the set consisting of a semi-rigid bracelet and a pair of earrings, the artist transfers the purity and geometric rigour of his artistic productions of the late 1960s, at that time an exponent of the Neo-Concretism trend, into gold. The bracelet features a repeated modular geometric design, harmonised by the play of solids and voids and the brilliance of the material and the diamonds set in it. A portion of the module is extrapolated and revisited for the clip fastening earrings: here the play of solids prevails, the module element is superimposed several times to create a new movement with triangular tendencies. Length x width of bracelet: 19 x 3.2 cm. Weight 125.7 g. Height x width earrings: 2.3 x 2.3 cm. Weight 13 g. Item condition grading: ***** excellent. Accompanied by Giorgio Tempesti's expertise.

            Dec. 06, 2022

Plexiglass structure, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984)

            Est: €1,500 - €2,500

Plexiglass structure, signed FRANCO CANNILLA (1911- 1984) born in Caltagirone on 13 February 1911, he died in Rome at the end of 1984. Initially approaching the local school of ceramics, his language approached a progressive abstraction of the plastic form, concretised in the 1950s in a search for proportional harmony through the use of the module, for the realisation of concrete art objects also in relation to new industrial materials. From the first sculptures, in which violent movements and gestures verge on abstraction in some cases, he arrived at strictly abstract compositions, in which the relationship with modern technology is evident. In fact, at the beginning of the 1960s, he moved towards solutions of a constructivist nature, of perceptive solicitation, close to kinetic research. He changed the use of materials and also adopted industrially produced materials such as steel, Plexiglas, etc. In 1961, Giovanni Carandente introduced him into the personal catalogue of the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice. And with this kinetic-constructivist work he installed a personal room at the XXXIII Venice Biennale in 1966, with a text by Giuseppe Gatt in the catalogue. In 1968 he was awarded first prize at the VI Roman Biennale. In the 1970s, he also worked intensively in the field of abstract photography. Franco Cannilla's work bears witness to the artist's adherence to the Gestalt or Neo-constructivist trend. This definition, rigorously theorised by Giulio Carlo Argan (XIII International Congress of Rimini), was divulged in articles in 'Il Messaggero' in August 1963 and, in a way, distinguished from the international optic-kinetic tendencies that emerged in 1959/60. This type of work by Cannilla does not lend itself to psychic or psychological consumption: they are given intact and intangible to perception and in the very instant that 'the eye takes them in, perception ceases to be a sensory trauma and rises to the level of an intellectual act. These objects are meters of space and selectors of light." Diagonal x side: 143 x 100.5 cm Item condition grading: ***** excellent. Accompanied by authentication by Giorgio Tempesti
