Théodore-Joseph Canneel dealt sporadically with Christian themes, having worked profusely in the genre of genre painting. However, his remarkable plastic skills are felt in a singular way in this painting, where the foreshortenings of the damned and their dramatic struggle with the snakes (symbols of evil) show a masterful draftsmanship. The tragic fight to death of Laocoon and his sons with the serpents comes to mind. Canneel was a connoisseur of the pictorial languages of the history of art, so that here the Hellenistic pathos with the baroque, reinterpreting both in this successful composition. Théodore-Joseph Canneel was a portraitist and genre painter, lithographer and Belgian art teacher. He began his pictorial activity at an advanced age, since he worked in his father's printing house from a very young age, where he learned the craft of lithography. Later he attended the classes of the painter Pieter van Hanselaere, during the period from 1838 to 1841, without stopping working. He then attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. From 1843, he became a professor at the same Academy. He undertook a trip to France and Italy to further his studies in painting, and on his return he was appointed director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He was also in 1869 inspector of the schools of fine arts in Belgium, corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium, the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen and honorary member of the Academy of Philadelphia, he was appointed officer of the Belgian Order of Leopold.

BIOGRAPHY: Theodore Joseph Canneel is a famous Belgian painter, whose works are in the possession of the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges He married in Ghent on 25 April 1851 with Clemence Isore-EemanTheodore descended from a long line of Bruges. The surname is mentioned in the book burgher of 1397. His grandfather was Francis Canneel fishmonger in Bruges; his father Joseph Canneel was foreman in the printing business, De Busscher. This printing was originally located in Bruges, but in 1815, with the fall of the French Empire , the buildings were looted. As a result, the printing same year moved to Ghent, and Father Joseph Canneel moved along. In this way, Theodore Ghent.Theodore began in 1830 at the age of 13 as a lithographer in the printing plant where his father worked. He then became assistant in the studio of the painter Hans Pieter Van Laere. From 1838 to 1841 he combined his work with a course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. There he became a teacher in 1843 teacher.From 1848 to 1850 he undertook a study visit Rome. On his return in 1850 he was appointed Director of the Ghent Academy. In 1869 he became Inspector of Schools and Academies Character of Belgium. For his services he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Leopold , the highest Belgian award.
