      • RICARDO CANALS LLAMBÍ (Barcelona, 1876 - 1931). "Flamenco show". Charcoal and wax on paper. Signed in the lower left corner.
        Oct. 15, 2024

RICARDO CANALS LLAMBÍ (Barcelona, 1876 - 1931). "Flamenco show". Charcoal and wax on paper. Signed in the lower left corner.

        Est: €1,200 - €1,300

RICARDO CANALS LLAMBÍ (Barcelona, 1876 - 1931). "Flamenco show". Charcoal and wax on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 22 x 32 cm; 38 x 48 cm (frame). Canals was a painter, draftsman and engraver, member of the "Colla del Safrà" (Saffron Group, so called because of its peculiar chromatic palette) together with the painters Nonell, Mir, Pichot and Vallmitjana. He began his studies at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona, but abandoned them soon after to continue painting in the street. A friend of Isidre Nonell, in 1896 they traveled together to Caldes de Boí, and the following year they moved to Paris. In the French capital they both exhibited at the gallery Chez Dosbourg with great success. Nonell returned to Barcelona and Canals stayed working for the art dealer Durand-Ruel, the dealer of the Impressionists, representing artists such as Corot, Monet and Pissarro. He was a personal friend of Picasso at this time, who portrayed his wife. He participated in the French Salons of 1897 and 1898, as well as in the exhibition held in 1902 at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in New York. In 1907 he returned definitively to Barcelona, where he presided over the association Las Artes y los Artistas. From then on he made several trips around Spain, visiting Madrid, Seville and Granada. From then on his works had a distinctly Spanish flavor, combined with his modern language. It was precisely this Spanish theme that brought him his greatest success in Paris, although in his later years he evolved towards a painting closer to noucentisme. He also distinguished himself as a portraitist. His last important work, before his untimely death, was the decoration of the ceiling of one of the rooms of the Barcelona City Hall. In 1933, two years after his death, the Sala Parés in Barcelona dedicated a large homage exhibition to him. Much of his work is preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, but it is also present in the collections of the Abbey of Montserrat, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Chile.

RICARDO CANALS LLAMBÍ (Barcelona, 1876 - 1931). "Dancer". Mixed media on paper. Signed in the lower right-hand corner.

        Est: €3,500 - €4,000

RICARDO CANALS LLAMBÍ (Barcelona, 1876 - 1931). "Dancer". Mixed media on paper. Signed in the lower right-hand corner. Measurements: 56,5 x 42,5 cm; 91 x 77 cm (frame). Ricardo Canals' most outstanding works had a distinctly Spanish flavour, combining folklore with a modern language. This "Bailaora" is an example of this, capturing the Andalusian panache with vibrant strokes and a juicy palette. Canals was a painter, draughtsman and engraver, a member of the "Colla del Safrà" (Saffron Group, so called because of its peculiar chromatic palette) together with the painters Nonell, Mir, Pichot and Vallmitjana. He began his studies at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, but abandoned them shortly afterwards to continue painting in the street. Nonell returned to Barcelona and Canals stayed on to work for the dealer Durand-Ruel, the dealer of the Impressionists, representing artists such as Corot, Monet and Pissarro. His last important work, before his premature death, was the decoration of the ceiling of one of the halls of Barcelona City Hall. In 1933, two years after his death, the Sala Parés in Barcelona held an extensive exhibition in homage to him. Much of his work is kept in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, but it is also in the collections of the Abbey of Montserrat, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Chile.

CORRIDA DE TOROS (LE COMBAT DE TAURAUX) 80 by 106cm., 31½ by 41¾in. signed R. Canals l.l.; titled and dated 1899 on an old label on the reverse oil on canvas EXHIBITED Toros, 1982, no. 10 NOTE Of all Spanish traditions, the bright colours, infectious fever, and heart-stopping drama of the bull-fighting ring provided the ultimate challenge to painters to transpose the raw passion of the spectacle onto canvas. One can almost hear the yells and gasps from the audience in Canals's monumental Corrida de toros as they helplessly watch as one of the matadors jumps to safety to escape the pointed horns of a bull as it dives into the flesh of his fallen horse. A member of the Colla del Safrà group, Canals travelled with Nonell (lots 170 & 191) to Paris in 1897 where he remained for the next ten years. Settling in the heart of Montmartre, the two artists spent their time in the bohemian cafés and bars. It was here that Canals met the dealer Charles Durand Ruel who encouraged him to paint Spanish subjects, such as the present work, which were very sought after on the French market at the time. Canals subsequently returned to Andalucia on a regular basis for inspiration. Bullfights were popular events in ancient Rome, but it was in the Iberian Peninsula that these contests were fully developed. The Moors from North Africa who overran Andalusia in AD 711 changed bullfighting significantly from the brutish, formless spectacle practised by the conquered Visigoths to a ritualistic occasion observed in connection with feast days, on which the conquering Moors mounted on highly trained horses, confronted and killed the bulls. In modern bullfighting, six bulls, to be killed by three matadors, are usually required for one afternoon's corrida, and each encounter lasts about 15 minutes. At the appointed time, generally five in the afternoon, the three matadors, each followed by their assistants, the banderilleros and the picadors, march into the ring in the accompaniment of traditional paso doble ('march rhythm') music. While the matador attempts his escape in the present work, the crowd hurl encouragement or abuse, urging the fight to go on. Another of the matadors tries to tempt the charging bull away as he begins his faena. Also known as the 'dance with death', the matador waves the thick piece of crimson cloth taunting the bull to charge. All the time tension and passion pulse through the crowd in anticipation of the bull's inevitable death.
