c1791 Group of 3 Russian Vedute Camporesi

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

A GROUP OF THREE VEDUTE ETCHINGS OF RUSSIAN SUBJECTS BY FRANCESCO CAMPORESI (ITALIAN 1747-1831), CIRCA 1791 comprising: (a) "Tserkva uspenia chto na pokrovk s toroni dvor v moskve 1791 / Eglise de l'assomption a la pokrovka du cote ge la cour, a moscau l'an 1791 [sic]" [Church of the Asumption as seen from the court, Moscow 1791], 38.5 x 52.5 cm (15 1/8 x 20 5/8 in.) (b) "Vid Andronieva Monastirya / Vue d Anndronyewskoy Monastére [sic]" [View of the Androniev Monastery], engraved by Aleksei Sveshnikov, 31.5 x 47.5 cm (12 3/8 x 18 3/4 in.) [sight] (c) "Vid s storoni ozera - sela mariina bani" [View from the Lakeside - Baths of the Marina Village], 36 x 50 cm (14 1/8 x 19 5/8 in.) [sight]. Works such as these by Francesco Camporesi are very rare, as most of his works perished in the Fire of 1812. Camporesi was born in Bologna and arrived in Russia in the 1780s, most likely as an assistant to Giacomo Quarenghi. From 1784-1796, Camporesi worked under Quarenghi and Karl Blank on Catherine's Palace (also known as Golovin Palace) in Moscow, and eventually became a generalist architect. In this capacity, he was involved on projects for many private clients, including Ostankino Palace, the Apraskin and Sheremetev estates in Yakhroma, and others. Most importantly, however, Camporesi is remembered today for his vedute works such as the present lots, for their valuable and artistic documentation of pre-1812 Moscow.
