The title possibly refers to the so-called ‘boat people’ (Balseros) who fled from Cuba to the United States during the ‘special period in peacetime’ (‘periodo especial’). The ‘periodo especial’ was an economic crisis that began in 1990 and lasted until 2000. The present painting depicts three boats with passengers floating on colorful iridescent waters. In the middle distance, the shoreline stretches with houses and trees, while on the horizon is depicted a cloudy sky. This is a typical decorative painting of the artist, executed in stylized forms and bright colors.
