        Two (2) oil on board European landscape paintings, attributed to Thomas Campbell (Tennessee, 1834-1914) including one depicting a windmill with figures and cottage in the background and another smaller landscape depicting a country cottage with stone wall and figure. Both housed in the original carved and molded gilt wood frames. Larger landscape measures: Sight - 11 1/4" H x 17 3/8" W. Framed - 17" H x 23" W. Smaller landscape measures: Sight - 5 3/8" H x 10" W. Framed - 9" H x 13 5/8" W. Provenance: Descended through the Knoxville, TN family of James D. Hoskins, a longtime patron of the artist who was instrumental in bringing Campbell to Tennessee.         Thomas Campbell Watercolor Landscape

        Thomas Campbell (Tennessee, 1834-1914) European watercolor depicting a young peasant girl in a meadow, surrounded by sheep, with trees and mountains in the background. Signed lower left "T. Campbell". Housed in a contemporary gilt and ebonized frame. Sight - 8 1/4" H x 13" W. Framed - 14 7/8" H x 19 3/4" W. Biography: Thomas Campbell immigrated to the U.S. at age 19 and was originally ordained as a minister. After his wife's death in 1892, he retired and turned to art. He founded the art department at Maryville College in 1902 and headed it until his death. His paintings were exhibited regionally and won several prizes and medals. He was also active in the Nicholson Art League and was a talented wood carver who produced picture frames and small pieces of furniture. Written en verso, "Marjorie Newman 1910, August and September". Good condition except for crease to masonite board on left and loss to upper right margin. Framed 13 3/4" H x 16 1/ W; Sight - 9 3/4" H x12 1/16 " W. 19th century. Note: Similar example depicting bridge over creek sold (Lot #81) in our Sept. 27, 2008 sale.
