The oil painting Hannibal Crossing the Alps is in the permanent collection of the Palmer Museum of Art, Penn State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. Both ex-collection private collection, New York. Campbell (1953-2007) was a Scottish artist whose mature figurative works typically focused on the surreal ridiculousness of the English gentleman. He was a key figure in the renaissance in Scottish art in the 1980s, which saw Glasgow, where he settled, become one of the major international centers for contemporary art at the time.

This painting has many references to William Blake. The Nursery is a reference to the naive and childlike way in which Blake’s stories told of a dark and complex subject, such as the Angel and the Tiger. The figure throws the hat up into the air in disgust, which is alike to Blake’s support of the Revolutionaries in France at the time. The shadow is Blake himself (hiding using his poems and stones) (nursery rhymes) to escape censorship and authority.
