      Helena Eastman Ogden Campbell (1879 -1934) Oil on Canvas Bridge with couple. Early 20th c. In frame measures 21"x18"x1". Weight 2 pds. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate. Helena Eastman Ogden Campbell was born in Eastman, Ga., and was graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. She went to Paris to study art under Lucien Simon, and later studied in New York, where she opened a studio. She had many portraits on display at Columbia University. Her specialty was portrait painting but she also did landscapes and still lifes. During World War II she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Ens. Herbert C. Jones, a Naval hero of Pearl Harbor. The picture now hangs in the office of the Secretary of the Navy in Washington. Mrs. Campbell did portraits of many leading educators and religious leaders, including Dr. Clark Wissler of the American Museum of Natural History, the Rev. Raymond Collyer Knox, chaplain of Columbia. University from, 1908 until 1952, and the Most Rev. Fulton J. Sheen, Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of New Y.ork.
