George Campbell RHA (1917-1979) TOLEDO oil on board signed lower left h:35.75  w:29.50 in. Provenance: Adam's & Bonhams, 8 December 2004, lot 93; Private collection Located 42 miles from Madrid, Toledo was once the Spanish capital and is known as 'The City of Three Cultures' owing to the influence of Christian, Muslim and Jewish culture imprinted on it. Domenikos Theotokópoulos (1541-1614), better known as El Greco, lived and worked in this melting pot for most of his life and many of his most important works - considered a precursor to Expressionism - can be found in the city. In light of the cultural importance of Toledo and its breadth of history and art it is unsurprising that an Irish artist, who made Spain his second home, would have visited the city and found inspiration there. In fact, Campbell painted the city numerous times with at least 8 views having appeared at auction in the last 20 years. Landscape paintings however were rare in the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque period and one of El Greco's works, View of Toledo, ca. 1599-1600 (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York ) is considered the first Spanish landscape painting of its time. Like El Greco's oil, Campbell's painting is also a landscape portrait which introduces its subject in the foreground with a wide view of the River Tagus which surrounds the city on three sides. Campbell's version is a more faithful documentary description of the landscape. The energy of the sky and the river create movement in the composition, and colour, although restrained, is used to dramatic effect with particular accents of blue and green paying homage perhaps to the Greek master. George Campbell in the company of his wife Madge and fellow artist Gerard Dillon first visited Spain towards the end of 1951. Following this initial trip he and Madge travelled annually to Andalucía, for the winter months particularly, and his first solo exhibition was held in Torremolinos in the mid 1950s. Campbell's interest in Spain extended beyond art to Spanish culture generally; the towns and cities and their characters, bullfights, religious processions, gypsies and Flamenco are among the many aspects of Iberian culture he embraced both in life and in paint. In 1978 his relationship with the country was formally acknowledged by the Spanish Government with the award of Commander with the Insignia and Privileges of the Order of the Merito Civile. 28 years later, in 2006, Malaga City Council celebrated his life and work by naming a roundabout after him, Glorieta Jorge Campbell. George F. Campbell RHA (1917-1979) Fishermen at Malaga (c.1966) oil on board signed 'Campbell' lower left h:52  w:79 cm. Provenance: Taylor deVeres Art Auctions, Dublin, May 1992 lot 28 (receipt attached); Private Collection Many of George Campbell's finest paintings date from the 1960s, when he lived and worked during the winter months in the fishing village of El Pedregalejo, near Málaga. In Spanish Fishing Village, the figures of men and women can be discerned, as can the forms of whitewashed houses behind them, but overall the painting is characterised by rapid, confident brushwork, and a sense of energy and animation in the application of paint. The curved lines of fishing boats contrast with the white cubes of houses, while in the background can be seen the undulating outline of hills. His paintings are invested with an appreciation of the cultures of both countries, and combine a strong Cubist sensibility with confident use of paint. The effect in Spanish Fishing Village is rich, dark and vigorous, a celebration of age-old traditional Mediterranean culture, infused, as is often the case with Campbell, with those darker tones that often characterise Spanish art from the Renaissance period onwards. Together with her sister Eva, Letitia Marion Hamilton spent her life painting, traveling and exhibiting. The two sisters did not marry and, with their dedication to art, went on to become known as 'The Hamwood Ladies'. After attending Alexandra College, in 1907 Hamilton enrolled at the Metropolitan School of Art, where she studied under William Orpen. She and her sister then moved to London, where Hamilton attended Chelsea Polytechnic, and also studied under Frank Brangwyn. She first exhibited at the RHA in 1909 and thereafter showed regularly at the Academy, being elected a member in 1943. In 1920, while living at Palmerstown, she was a founding member of the Society of Dublin Painters. Five years later, she exhibited at the Paris Salon. She also showed work in London; at the Goupil Gallery, the RA and the Fine Art Society. [On the reverse of this painting is view, by Letitia Hamilton, of a Moorish-style gateway, probably in Spain, with an ox-drawn cart in the foreground.] Peter Murray, March 2023

George F. Campbell RHA (1917-1979) Reedy Country, Donegal

George F. Campbell RHA (1917-1979) Reedy Country, Donegal oil on board signed 'Campbell' lower left h:51  w:76.30 cm. Provenance: The Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Collection of Ivan Selig Esq.; Private Collection In this coastal scene, Campbell captures perfectly the colours and textures of an overcast winter's day in Donegal. In the far distance, the silvery light of sunshine beaming through gaps in the clouds illuminates the sea. Patches of sunlight also add a dash of colour to the still waters of a salt marsh in the foreground, surrounded by reeds. The paintwork is expressionist, characterized by swift marks made with the handle of a paintbrush, or edge of a palette knife, that invest the foreground of the painting with energy and tension, in contrast to the somber, still colours of the middle and far distance. Born in Arklow in 1917, George Campbell was raised in Belfast by his widowed mother, Gretta Bowen, (who herself would later became a well-known painter). During World War II, after witnessing the destruction of a section of the city by aerial bombardment, Campbell felt compelled to take up painting, and recorded his visual impressions of the ruined buildings. He became friendly with fellow-artist Gerard Dillon, from the Falls Road, with whom he visited Connemara. Campbell's first exhibition was held in March 1944 at the Mol Gallery in Belfast, and together with his brother Arthur, he produced a book, Ulster in Black and White (1943). Evolving a style that was influenced by the School of Paris, he based his compositions on landscapes and still lifes, but employed an expressionist painterly technique. Campbell then spent several months in London, before having his first solo show, in 1946, at the Victor Waddington Gallery in Dublin. Two years later, he exhibited in London, along with Daniel O'Neill, Gerard Dillon and Nevill Johnson. In 1948, he was in Paris, where he got to know the Russian Modernist sculptor Ossip Zadine. Returning to Ireland, Campbell spent some time living in Connemara, in Gerard Dillon's cottage on Inishlackan Island, near Roundstone. From 1951 onwards he travelled frequently in Spain, while continuing his painting trips to the West of Ireland and Donegal. Peter Murray, March 2023

            Est: €6,000 - €8,000

George Campbell RHA (1917-1979) Toledo Oil on board, 50.8 x 76.2cm (20 x 30'') Signed Provenance: With Hendriks Gallery at The Cork Arts Society Gallery, Lavitt's Quay, Cork, 25th May 1974, No.12. George Campbell began his life in County Wicklow before moving to Northern Ireland with his family. In his mid-twenties, having fully committed to life as an artist, Campbell returned South and established himself near Dublin port. Here, Campbell came into contact with the Spanish sailors as they moved in and out of the city. From these encounters, Campbell’s fascination with Spain took root and it was only a matter of time before he ventured over. In 1951, accompanied by his wife and artist Gerard Dillon, Campbell worked his way down through Spain. Reaching the Spanish coast in the south, Campbell fell in love with Málaga and became incorporated into the lifestyle and culture of the town. Over the next twenty years, Campbell spent his winters in Spain, escaping the less favourable Irish climate. He fell in love with the colours, the music and the characters, filling his sketchbooks with the vibrancy of Spanish life. On returning to Ireland each spring, Campbell would turn these sketches into fully matured oil paintings, selling them through galleries in Dublin and London. Moving away from the coast, Campbell made several paintings of Toledo. Located in central Spain, just south of Madrid, Toledo is imbued with history and cultural significance. For an artist who was drawn to the historical and ancient sites of Ireland, Toledo represented a Spanish equivalent. Surrounded on three sides by a river, the city dates back to Roman rule and was once the capital of the Spanish Empire. In the 16th century, Toledo was home to El Greco, an artist whose work was much admired by Campbell and this must have resonated with him as he painted his cityscapes. Gazing onto the city from the far side of the river, Campbell provides us with an extensive view of Toldeo. George Campbell RHA (1917-1979) Irish Musicians Oil on board, 61 x 45cm (24 x 17¾'') Signed A gifted visual artist, George Campbell was also a fine musician. Most famously, perhaps, he became a proficient Flamenco guitarist during his time in Spain. His musical ability was an aspect of his questing creativity but, while he accepted that he must sell his paintings to make a living, he “regarded his music as a form of relaxation,” as his close friend and contemporary, painter Arthur Armstrong put it. Still, having taken lessons in Flamenco guitar, and regularly partaking in jam sessions with the local musicians, among whom he was known as Jorge, he went on to teach it and he was equally well acquainted with Irish traditional music. While he and his wife Margaret (‘Madge’) had a consistent routine of spending at least half the year, from autumn through spring, in Spain, mostly in Pedregalejo, close to Malaga, they spent the rest of the time in Ireland. Around the mid-1960s they rented a house in Virgina, Co. Cavan. Karen Reihill has documented how, once established there, they became friendly with local traditional musicians, notably Patsy Cooke, Mickey Caldwell and Jimmy Fay among a wider musical circle. Inevitably Campbell joined them with his guitar, but he was also inspired to embark on a substantial series of paintings of Irish musicians. In addition, he became closely involved in the rich music scene during stays in Ardara in Co Donegal. Aidan Dunne May 2022

Provenance: Private Collection George Campbell was fascinated by music (he was also an accomplished guitarist), Spain and painting. A technically proficient artist, he easily absorbed aspects of Cubism into his personal style. All these qualities are apparent in this beautiful work, a study of a Spanish town in which the undulating, musical rhythm echoes the rise and fall of the land, and the topographical detail is economically conveyed in a grid-like Cubist pattern.

The cream-white walls belie the scorching effect of the sun, all colour having been leached over time. The blurred edges of the city’s boundaries bring a mystic affect to the scene, giving the sense that, to Campbell, Toledo bore an otherworldly quality, a life vastly different to that on offer in Ireland. In 1978, Campbell’s contribution to Spain was officially recognised when he was made a Commander of the Order of Merito Civile. Dying the following year, Campbell’s life, split across Ireland and Spain, is remembered in the works that he created. This captivating scene of Toledo is a magnificent example of the love that he held for his second country.

Exhibited: 'George Campbell and the Belfast Boys', The Ava Gallery, Clandeboye, Co. Down, 6th August-3rd September 2015, catalogue illustration no.96. In the 1960s, Campbell began to make a series of trips to the West of Ireland and in particular to the town of Clifden. His fascination with the place led to the creation of a body of work centred on this townscape. They are similar in compositional arrangement to his paintings from further afield of the Spanish city of Toledo and island of Tenerife as well as another popular Irish coastal village, Roundstone. Originally the Clifden series was more topographically focused, this became looser and more fluid in later years as he continued his exploration of the atmosphere of the place rather than trying to capture the exact appearance of it. Key landmarks do reappear across the paintings, such as the soaring octagonal spire of St Joseph’s Church. In other examples, we are looking side on at the town but in this instance, Campbell has given the viewer an unique position from above, looking down over the buildings and out onto the bay and towards the Atlantic beyond. The town, positioned in an arc, hugs at the edges of the bay, water lapping against it shores, with the unique landscape of Connemara stretching out to either side. We are reminded that Clifden is set amongst rugged and rural surroundings. We can imagine the rain coming in off the coast, with the rough and unsettled waters taking on an ominous inky black. As a town it is at the will of the natural elements, and Campbell uses a muted tonal palette of whites, greys and browns, and soft blurring brushstrokes, to create an image of the west coast town on a blustery, winter’s day. Provenance: Guy Dixon Collection; Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin; exhibited Irish Exhibition of Living Art, 1951. A contemporary review of the Irish Exhibition by I. T. Quin in The Irish Monthly mentions a "strikingly effective" work by George Campbell titled Night: Island Harbour, which is perhaps his own made up title for this piece. Inishlacken is an island in Galway, Ireland where Campbell lived for the summer of 1951 with Gerard Dillon and James MacIntyre. MacIntyre published a book about that summer titled "Three Men on an Island." Campbell was a founding member of the Progressive Painters Group and of the NI branch of the Artists' International Association.

Perhaps the pivotal figure of the Belfast Boys, as they were known, George Campbell was, like his friend Gerard Dillon, energized and inspired when he visited the west of Ireland in the mid-1940s. Connemara remained an important source of inspiration throughout his life (Spain, where he spent the winters, was also crucial). With others of his generation, he was a key modernizing influence on mid-century Irish art. During a spell in Paris at the end of the 1920s he fruitfully assimilated the lessons of Picasso and Cubism in his own work, without sacrificing its individual character.
