Charles Campbell Art for Sale at Auction

b. 1915 - d. 2014

Charles Campbell (1915-2014) was an artist and jazz aficionado who became a legendary gallerist closely tied to the rise of the Bay Area Figurative movement in post war San Francisco. Campbell was a devotee of Jazz who worked as a driver for Art Tatum in Los Angeles in the 1940s, and later used his stenographic skills acquired in the military to transcribe extensive interviews with Jelly Role Morton. In the late 1940s, artists at the nearby California School of Fine Arts convinced Campbell to turn his frame shop into a gallery and the rest is history. Over a 50 year period Campbell showed Nathan Oliveria, Wayne Thiebaud and many other Bay Area luminaries.
