Attributed to FRANCISCO CAMILO (Madrid 1610-1671). "The Trinity", Oil on canvas. Re-drawn. It presents faults and losses on the pictorial surface. Measurements: 145,5 x 102 cm. On a vaporous background dominated by a break of glory, the artist unfolds the devotional image starring the Trinity. The dove of the Holy Spirit, God the Father and Jesus Christ. The work departs from the usual representation of this theme, which is based on a simple composition. The scene becomes complex with the presence of several little angels, cherubs and an angel holding Christ's cross, as well as the orb and the serpent alluding to original sin and the iconography of the Virgin, specifically the invocation of the Immaculate Conception, although this is not found in the image. The scene presents Jesus in the centre, showing the wounds on his hands and with the cross on his back, although he is no longer on it, thus indicating that he has risen from the dead. The upper area is dominated by the dove opening its wings and crowning the scene, while on the right God the Father can be seen in profile to the viewer looking at his son. The scene, which stands out for the darkness of the ochre tones, is notable for the great theatricality of the gestures and even the way in which the painter composes the scene, a device very much in keeping with the Baroque taste, which sought to overwhelm the faithful. Devotional works of this type were very common in Counter-Reformation Europe. The Madrid school emerged around the court of first Philip IV and then Charles II, and developed throughout the 17th century. Analysts of this school have insisted on considering its development as a result of the binding power of the court; what is truly decisive is not the place of birth of the different artists, but the fact that they were educated and worked around and for a nobiliary and religious clientele based next to royalty. This allows and favours a stylistic unity, even though there are the logical divergences due to the personalities of those involved. In this particular case the work is aesthetically close to the painting of Francisco Camilo, who was a Spanish painter, the son of an Italian who settled in Madrid. When his father died, his mother remarried and Camilo became the stepson of the painter Pedro de las Cuevas. De las Cuevas raised Camilo as his own son, teaching him to paint. At the age of 18, Camilo was asked to paint an image of Saint Francis Borgia for the main altar of the Jesuit house in Madrid. The Count-Duke of Olivares commissioned Camilo to paint a series of pictures of Kings of Spain for the Buenretiro theatre. The Count-Duke also chose Camillo to decorate the western gallery of the palace with 14 frescoes of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Primarily a painter of religious works, Camillo painted for the monasteries of Madrid, Toledo, Alcalá and Segovia. He painted and dressed part of Manuel Pereyra's statuary.
