      Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Pair of oil paintings on canvas These works were probably part of the set of 46 canvases that Camaron made for the choir of the Vall de Crist charterhouse, in Castellon. The canvases were located on each of the walls of the seats occupied by the Carthusian fathers and which he made from 1750 to 1960. The group was dispersed throughout the 19th century with the French invasion first, and the confiscation of MLateizabal later. Both scenes refer to passages from Genesis and represent a very good example of the quality of the painter from his beginnings, which led him to be named an academic of merit at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1772. JOSE CAMARON Y BONANAT Segorbe, Castellón 1731 - Valencia 1803 Coastal view at sunset. H. 1790 Oil on canvas Measurements 69 x 90.5 cm Important and delicate landscape that must have been part of a series of views painted by Camarón around 1790. These works are clearly pre-romantic. Very close to the aesthetics of the sublime, they mix topographical and artistic description with idealized overtones that were very fashionable in the France of Louis XV. Its dating can be compared with a small format landscape in a private collection in Madrid, signed and dated 1796. A "View of a Mediterranean port" (oil on canvas, 69 x 90 cm.) from the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia and “Landscape with three hunters resting” (oil on canvas, 70 x 91cm.) from Madrid trade. With them they also share the dimensions, the treatment of the figures and numerous details of the backgrounds. Camarón is one of the few Spanish artists of the 18th century who cultivated the landscape, being greatly admired by his contemporaries. As the Baron of Alcahalí points out, “a rare thing was also in this artist the gift of covering with equal ease and correctness genres as different as the figure and the landscape, because if his religious paintings are notable, the landscapes cause no less admiration than as precious jewel, kept by some intelligent fans.” An example is the Marquis of Almunia "who, with the artistic competence that distinguishes him, preserves and esteems two very beautiful paintings of this genre for what they are worth" or the queen's diamond artist, Leonardo Chopinot, who had four landscapes by Camarón in his collection or the English ambassador who “admired the prodigious color of his landscapes, had to spend a long time with his brushes.” We thank the researcher Adela Espídos Díaz for her help in cataloging this work. • JOSÉ CAMARÓN BORONAT (Segorbe, Castellón, 1731 - Valencia, 1803). "Apparition of the Virgin". Oil on canvas. Later stretcher frame. With old restorations on the back.

JOSÉ CAMARÓN BORONAT (Segorbe, Castellón, 1731 - Valencia, 1803). "Apparition of the Virgin". Oil on canvas. Later stretcher frame. With old restorations on the back.

      Est: €8,000 - €10,000

JOSÉ CAMARÓN BORONAT (Segorbe, Castellón, 1731 - Valencia, 1803). "Apparition of the Virgin". Oil on canvas. Later stretcher frame. With old restorations on the back. Measurements: 188 x 108,5 cm. The image of this devotional canvas is related to a passage of the life of San Francisco that represents a miraculous apparition of the Virgin with the child to the saint. The author represents the saint kneeling and with a book in his hand, abstracted in his gaze. The apparition is celestial, with the Virgin surrounded by fluttering cherub heads and an angel next to her. The careful workmanship of sober and balanced tonalities stands out, drawing the fine features of the characters in a sober and distinguished way. Painter, engraver and illustrator, José Camarón Boronat was one of the most outstanding Valencian painters of the second half of the 18th century. He came from a family of artists, and was the father of the painter José Camarón Meliá. He began his training with his father, the sculptor Nicolás Camarón, and continued his studies under the direction of his uncle Eliseus Camarón, a painter of miniatures who transmitted to him a virtuoso detail. Later, for a brief period of time, he studied with the rococo painter Miguel Posadas. In 1749 he moved to Valencia, where he remained until 1752, when he went to Madrid to complete his training. It is believed that he attended the workshop of the Valencian Francisco Bonay and, perhaps, the classes of the Academy of San Fernando, where Corrado Giaquinto left his mark on his style. In his first stage, Camarón Boronat dedicated himself to landscape painting, miniatures and copies of Baroque masters such as Titian, Rubens, Van Dyck and Murillo. In 1754 he returned to Valencia, where he was appointed professor of painting at the newly created Academy of Santa Barbara. Years later, in 1762, the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid accepted him as a member of merit, and in 1768 he was among the founders of the Academy of San Carlos, where he was first professor of painting and later general director. Camarón Boronat was a good teacher and a prolific painter, who dealt with all genres: he made numerous religious and profane paintings, allegories, portraits, landscapes and seascapes. He also covered a variety of techniques, from easel painting and miniature to fresco and pastel, so important in the Rococo period. Among his religious commissions were the twenty altarpieces he painted in the eighties for the cathedral of Valencia, or his series of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid. However, it was his genre themes that were the most successful and innovative part of his work; his paintings of this type stand out for their festive character and stylized figures, from which emanates a Spanish rococo charm, built on careful brushstrokes and cheerful tones. Camarón Boronat also made numerous drawings for prints, some of which he engraved himself, such as the thirty-one plates for the 1777 edition of Don Quixote. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid and the National Library, among other public and private collections.

JOSÉ CAMARÓN BORONAT (Segorbe, Castellón, 1731 - Valencia, 1803). Untitled. Oil on canvas. Re-drawn. It has restorations. It has a 19th century frame. Measurements: 75,5 x 45 cm; 82 x 52 cm (frame). Pair of oil on canvas representing scenes from the Old Testament, perhaps probably referring to the life of Joseph, son of Jacob. This theory can be reinforced by the inscription on one of the paintings "Dedit illi Pharao", which means that the pharaoh orders it. Both pieces have a similar format, based on verticality and a very fluid and sinuous aesthetic finish that can be seen especially in the treatment of the canvases and the elongation of the anatomy. Est: €12,000 - €18,000

JOSE CAMARON Y BONANAT Segorbe, Castellón 1731 - Valencia 1803 “El faraón dando a Asenat por esposa a José”. M. 1756-1760 Oil on canvas Measurements 75.5 x 45 cm PROVENANCE: - Vall de Crist Charterhouse, Castellón, h. 1756. - Private collection, Madrid. The pair of oil paintings by José Camarón and Bonanat composed of “Abraham y Melquisedec” and “El faraón dando a Asenat por esposa a José” is part of a set of works that, in all likelihood, belonged to the choir of the Charterhouse of Vall de Crist (Castellón, founded in 1385). Camarón was commissioned to decorate 46 canvases with each of the heads of the seats occupied by the Carthusian fathers in the late 1750s. The scene described by “Abraham and Melquisedec” refers to the passage from the Book of Genesis (14: 18-24), Psalm 110 and Epistle to the Hebrews, which alludes to heavenly food. A victorious Abraham offers part of his plunder to Melchizedek, High Priest, king and prophet of Salem city who, gratefully, brings bread and wine to bless him in an act that is conceived as a prefiguration of the Last Supper and, therefore, of the Eucharist. With regard to “El faraón dando a Asenat por esposa a José” also makes reference to the Book of Genesis (41:45), specifically, to the episode in the life of Patriarch Joseph in which reference is made to one of Pharaoh's dreams and how he gave her as a wife Asenat, daughter of the priest of On Potiphar. Undoubtedly, this set is an exceptional testimony of the beginnings of José Camarón Bonanat and opens the possibility of recognizing, a little better, the artistic merits that led him to be appointed honourable academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1772. But unfortunately, the perilous vicissitudes of the artistic heritage of the charterhouse throughout the 19th century caused the complete dispersion of this heritage and today it is practically impossible to reconstruct the exact provenance of Camarón's works for this charterhouse.
