CALVERT, Samuel: City of Adelaide, SA, Looking South-East (lithograph)

      Est: $1,200 - $1,500

CALVERT, Samuel (1828-1913): City of Adelaide, SA, Looking South-East. Notes: An original lithograph (visible image size 260 x 345 mm) recently matted, framed and glazed; paper lightly and uniformly tanned; in excellent condition. According to the catalogue of the State Library of South Australia, this lithograph is based on Calvert's watercolour, 'A View of Adelaide', an oval-shaped painting in the Art Gallery of South Australia. It was issued as a free supplement to the April 1850 number of 'The Monthly Almanac and Illustrated Commentator'. It was advertised in 'The Mercury and South Australian Sporting Chronicle' as being 'Taken from an entirely new point of view, embracing the principal edifices, the Torrens, Park Lands, and picturesque Mountain Scenery'. However, before the eye focuses on those marvels, it is struck by the imposing foreground featuring a sluggish water course littered with dead timber and fallen trees, with a group of Aborigines fishing in it on one side, and a large cattle-yard draining into it from the other; free-range goats forage near the large stumps on the barren and almost denuded plain stretching all the way to the city's edge. It is unarguably rare, though ... Carroll 29.
