Edward Calvert 1799-1883- "The Lady with the Rooks" 1829 , wood engraving; 3rd state, possibly from the portfolio 'The Early Engravings of Edward Calvert', published by the Carfax Gallery, London, 1904, 5x8.5cm: "The Flood"; c.1829, lithograph, published by Edward Calvert, 4.5x8.5cm, (2) (shared mount) Note: Of all Calvert's prints, the atmosphere of "The Lady with the Rooks" comes closest to the literary taste for romanticised medieval imagery. the diamond windows within the ancient tower, the damsel and the sombre mood illustrated by the black rooks silhouetted against the fading light were all ideals of the gothic novels.
