Il dipinto, quindi, fu probabilmente eseguito prima del soggiorno a Roma, città nella quale il pittore si trasferì nel 1572 per partecipare, al fianco del Sabatini, alla decorazione della Sala Regia in Vaticano. Da un punto di vista stilistico l'opera risente della forte cultura controriformistica dell'epoca, al cui spirito aderisce sia nella scelta del tema - quello particolarmente apprezzato dell'apparizione della Vergine a un santo - sia nell'esecuzione di un'iconografia chiara e decorosa. L'elegante corpo di San Sebastiano, legato a un albero e delicatamente coperto da un perizoma, si mostra nel pieno dolore causato dalle frecce che lo trafiggono, mentre fiducioso rivolge lo sguardo, in estasi, alla Vergine che, insieme al Bambino, appare in alto, a sinistra, dentro a un cerchio di luce soprannaturale. In basso, a destra, uno stemma nobiliare è segno di una prestigiosa committenza.

(Antwerp 1540–1619 Bologna) Christ among the doctors, traces of a signature or monogram lower centre, oil on copper, 38 x 29 cm, framed Provenance: art market, Spain; where acquired by the present owner We are grateful to Daniele Benati for endorsing the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. As is related in the Gospel of Saint Luke, Jesus was taken, at the age of 12, to the Temple in Jerusalem by Mary and Joseph and became separated from them. After three days of searching, they found their son learnedly debating with the doctors. This is the moment at which Christ first identifies himself as the Son of God, asking his parents: ‘Why are you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house’. The Flemish artist Denys Calvaert first trained in Antwerp as a landscape painter, under the guidance of Christiaen van Queecborn. Around 1560 he moved to Bologna, joining Prospero Fontana’s atelier. In 1572 Calvaert moved again, this time to Rome, where he assisted Lorenzo Sabatini in his works for the Vatican and devoted much of his time to copying and studying the works of Raphael. Returning to Bologna, he founded an art academy, in which numerous painters were trained, including future prominent artists such as Guido Reni, Francesco Albani and il Domenichino. Calvaert introduced small colourful devotional paintings on copper, such as the present painting, to Italian painting and they became very popular among private collectors. In addition to these small works, he specialised in producing large altarpieces: his Saint Michael, one of his most celebrated works, is preserved in the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna.

Report from Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, dated July 28, 2023, in which he determines that the painting was made in Italy in the last decade of the 16th century. The seated Mary is enthroned with her child on her lap in a tiered outdoor area, which ends at the top in two mighty round columns, which are surmounted by Corinthian capitals and connected by a red velum. Around her are numerous angels, some of whom are playing music, and to the right of them is Saint Catherine, stretching out her hand to the Christ child. What is primarily shown here is the mystical marriage of Catherine of Alexandria, who receives the ring from the child Jesus. The angels and cherubim depicted on all sides are individualized. Calvaert, who was born in Antwerp, was initially a landscape painter and then trained as a figure painter in Bologna under, among others, Antonio Allegri Correggio (around 1489-1534) and Tibaldi da Bologona (1527-1596). In addition to large-format works, the pictures painted on copper were particularly successful at the time. Oil on copper. 50.5x35cm.

Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, vom 28. Juli 2023,in Kopie, in dem er bestimmt, dass das Gemälde im letzten Jahrzehnt des 16. Jahrhunderts in Italien durch den genannten Künstler geschaffen worden ist. In einem gestuften Außenbereich, der nach oben in zwei mächtigen Rundsäulen abschließt, die von korinthischen Kapitellen überfangen und durch ein rotes Velum verbunden werden, thront die sitzende Maria mit ihrem Kind auf dem Schoß. Um sie herum zahlreiche teils musizierende Engel, rechts davon die Heilige Katharina, ihre Hand nach dem Christuskind ausstreckend. Vorrangig ist hier also die mystische Vermählung Katharinas von Alexandrien gezeigt, die vom Jesuskind den Ring angesteckt bekommt. Die allseits dargestellten Engel und Cherubim individualisiert. Zunächst war Calvaert, der in Antwerpen geboren wurde, Landschaftsmaler und wurde dann in Bologna u.a. bei Antonio Allegri Correggio (um 1489-1534) und Tibaldi da Bologona (1527-1596) als Figurenmaler ausgebildet. Denys Calvaert: Adoration of the shepherds

Denys Calvaert Adoration of the shepherds c. 1600/10 oil on panel 136 x 109 cm private property, Austria Denys or Dionys Calvaert came from Antwerp but began his training in Italy very early in the workshops of Lorenzo Sabatini (1530 – 1576) and Prospero Fontana (1512 – 1597). Thanks to his intensive study of the works of Correggio and Parmigianino, he soon became a sought-after landscape and figure painter. The Flemish founded a respected workshop in Bologna, where he trained students such as Guido Reni (1575-1642) and Domenichino (1581 – 1641). Characteristics of Calvaert's style are the finely formulated facial features of the figures and the bright colour shades of the robes, although here the colouring was chosen to be more subtle and seems to adapt to the tonal background. The protagonists interacting with each other, mostly shown in profile or three-quarter profile, already show the typical pointed fingers, which Guido Reni later adapted for his paintings. The composition of the main group of figures in the middle ground is particularly close to a pen drawing of the "Adoration of the Shepherds" (Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Staatliche Museen, Inv. No. 18602) by Polidoro da Caravaggio (1499-1543). The figures were arranged in a similar way on a rock plateau bordering on a temple complex. There are relations in posture, orientation and pointing gestures of the Holy Family, admirers and approaching shepherds. It is possible that the Berlin figure study provided the inspiration for Calvaert's present work. "In addition to the Holy Family sitting on a raised rock, the scene in the upper part of the painting with a band of clouds illuminated by the sun, on which winged angels performing music in colourful robes are hovering down, is particularly striking. This radiant brightness, which allows the viewer to clearly see the details of the foreground and middle ground, is characteristic of the period of Caracci painting in Bologna at the beginning of the 17th century. There in Bologna Calvaert 'leaves' Flemish landscape painting completely and turns entirely to depicting religious figures" (cf. certificate Dr. Ertz).

The present painting is made by the Flemish painter Denijs Calvaert, influenced by Correggio and his masters Prospero Fontana and Lorenzo Sabattini. The Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are shown as caring parents of the Christ Child, who standing above the cradle turns his gaze to Saint John the Baptist and the lamb. The Baptist is dressed in the animal furs that predict his preaching in the desert. In the background, composed by a purple curtain, two angels hold out a beautiful crown of roses on the head of Jesus. The figures with delicate features are represented in profile or in three-quarter profile. The intense and luminous colors demonstrate the close affiliation with Raphael Sanzio, who Calvaert had the opportunity to see during his stay in Rome. It is in many ways a characteristic work of Calvaert. Typical elements of the master that are found here are both the smoothness of the application of the color, which evokes the enamel, and the choice of the subject, influenced by intense feelings. The Flemish Calvaert, who spent most of his life in Italy, knew how to combine in his work the powerful colorism of the Flemish mannerists with multiple Italian influences. DIE ANBETUNG DER KÖNIGE Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 75 x 60 cm. Nachtstück mit dem am Himmel leuchtenden Stern von Bethlehem, dem die Heiligen drei Könige zur Krippe Jesu gefolgt sind. Im Vordergrund links vor dem Eingang eines Gebäudes mit Stallung die auf einem Architekturfragment sitzende Maria in rosafarbenem Gewand, gelblichem Umhang und blauem Mantel, auf ihrem Schoß den Jesusknaben haltend. Vor ihm kniend einer der Könige mit weißem Bart, in einem prachtvoll bestickten, gold-gelb leuchtenden Gewand, einen goldenen Kelch haltend, dessen Deckel er gerade geöffnet hat. Er sieht das Kind voller Interesse an, das mit dem Finger seiner rechten Hand in den Pokal weist und dabei seine Mutter Maria liebevoll anblickt. Hinter dem Knienden die beiden weiteren Könige, gehüllt in edle wertvolle Gewänder, der Rechte in einem blauen Gewand, mit Broschen und Perlen verziert, ein weiteres goldenes Gefäß und seinen Turban mit Krone in der linken Hand haltend, und schließlich der dritte König in grünem Gewand mit leuchtend rotem Mantel, einer altrosafarbenen Kopfbedeckung mit Krone, ein goldenes Gefäß in seiner rechten Hand haltend und den Jesusknaben intensiv anblickend. Rechts im Hintergrund das Gefolge der Könige mit Pferden vor bergiger Landschaft, durch die erzählerisch der Weg der Könige zur Heiligen Familie mit Figuren wiedergegeben werden soll. Hinter Maria der stehende Josef, einen Stab in seinen Händen haltend und rechts des Jesuskindes sind Ochs und Esel an einer Futterkrippe fressend wiedergegeben. Qualitätvolles Werk des Künstlers, bei der die prachtvollen farbintensiven Kleider in den Vordergrund gestellt werden. Rest., Retuschen. Der in Antwerpen geborene Künstler reiste 1560 als junger Mann nach Italien und studierte in Bologna, wo er sich für den Rest seiner Karriere niederließ. Sein Atelier brachte einige der größten Namen der Bologneser Malerei hervor, wie Domenichino (1581-1641), Guido Reni (1575-1642) und Francesco Albani (1578-1660). Seine farbenfrohen Andachtsbilder waren in Bologna sehr beliebt. Anbetung der Hirten Öl auf Holz. 97 x 75 cm. In gekehltem Goldrahmen. Calvaert, der in Antwerpen geboren wurde und dort Schüler von Christian van Queborn war, ging bereits 1560 nach Italien und arbeitete in Bologna, Rom und Modena. Dort entstanden die meisten seiner Werke, die auch Niederschlag in den Arbeiten seiner Schüler fanden. Unter seinen Schülern waren auch Domenichino, Francesco Albani und Guido Reni. Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt einen sich gut in das Werk Calvaerts einfügenden Aufbau. Im Zentrum die halb kniende halb stehende Maria ins Gebet versunken mit ihrem Blick auf das Jesuskind gerichtet, das zu ihren Füßen liegt. Neben diesem ein Lamm als Agnus Dei, hinter ihm Ochs und Esel. Zur Rechten Mariae Josef, dessen Haupt ebenso mit einem Nimbus bedacht wurde wie dasjenige Mariae. Die Hirten und andere Figuren sind auf das Christuskind ausgerichtet, im sich hell öffnenden Himmel eine Gruppe Cherubim mit einem Rotulus mit der stets aktuellen Inschrift „GLORIA INECCELSIS DEO ET INTERRA PAX.“ Anmerkung: Vgl. Wenngleich Calvaert zunächst in Antwerpen unter Christian van den Queborn lernte, dann in Bologna jedoch unter Prospero Fontana und Lorenzo Sabbatini, deren kompositionelle Auffassung in seinem Werk nachklingt. So atmet auch das hier angebotene beeindruckende Gemälde den Geist Bolognas, besonders auch in Hinblick auf die über den Köpfen der dicht aneinander dargestellten Figuren angeht. The Flemish artist was active in Italy from an early age and stayed there throughout his life. Mary sits on the left edge of the picture with the baby Jesus on her lap, who turns to his mother questioningly and points to the gift of the oldest king, who is kneeling in front of him. Mary wears a blue coat and a pale purple dress. The king, in a magnificent golden brocade cloak, has discarded his crown as a sign of humility. Behind him on the right stands the youngest of the kings, Caspar, dressed in a blue robe. He is holding his turban with the crown in his hand. The color of the third king is somewhat different, but his red cloak, together with the blue and yellow robes of the other kings, forms the basic triad colors. The stable at Bethlehem is depicted as an ancient ruin. The procession of the Magi stretches far back into the mountainous landscape, a motif of Italian tradition.

RefOld13921 DER HEILIGE HIERONYMUS MIT MARIA UND ENGELN Öl auf Kupfer. 24,5 x 18,6 cm. In profiliertem Holzrahmen.Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, vom 12. September 2018 der das Gemälde auf die 1580er-Jahre in Italien datiert und lokalisiert. Knapper Landschaftsausschnitt mit linksseitiger Darstellung der Einsiedelei des Hieronymus und mit dem Heiligen darunter. Neben ihm der ihm attributiv zugeordnete Löwe, über dem Maria mit den Engeln schwebt. Die Komposition, die in den Bewegungen der Figuren ihren Ausdruck findet und in den unterschiedlich gesetzten Diagonalen ihre Spannung erhält, ist Ausdruck seiner Vorliebe für theatralische Kompositionen in manieristischer Formensprache. Auch die emailhaft, pastos aufgetragenen Farben sind typisch für seine Gemälde, die vor der Jahrhundertwende in Italien entstanden. Zunächst war Denys Calvaert, der in Antwerpen geboren wurde, Landschaftsmaler und wurde dann in Bologna u.a. bei Antonio da Correggio (1489-1534) und Tibaldi da Bologona (1527-1596) als Figurenmaler ausgebildet. Neben großformatigen Werken waren schon seinerzeit vor allem die auf Kupfer gemalten Bilder besonders erfolgreich. Anmerkung: In dem vorliegenden Gemälde übernimmt Calvaert die Bilderfindung Tintorettos, dessen Gemälde im Ateneo Veneto in Venedig hängt. Wir danken Michele Danieli für den freundlichen Hinweis. Das Gemälde wurde individuell mit dem Datenbestand des Art Loss Register abgeglichen; es ist dort nicht als gestohlen oder vermisst registriert. Provenienz: aus Jahrzehnte altem Privatbesitz. Die feinen Gesichtszüge der italienisch beeinflussten Figuren sowie die flämisch geprägte Landschaft legen nahe, dass es sich wohl um ein Werk des Künstlers Denis Calvaert handelt. Der berühmte Flame, welcher den Hauptteil seines Lebens in Italien verbrachte, vereinigte in seinen Werken den flämischen Manieristen mit mannigfaltigen italienischen Einflüssen.

Denys Calvaert, who was born in the Antwerp, moved to Italy at a young age and stayed there all his life. He was primarily active in Bologna, where he founded a school from which important students such as Guido Reni, Francesco Albani and Domenichino emerged. The painting reproduces the so-called Madonna della Ghiara. The composition is based on a design by Lelio Orsi (1511–1587) from 1569 for the servants of Reggio nell’Emilia, who wanted to have an old votive picture on the garden wall of their monastery renewed. In 1573, after this drawing, Giovanni Bianchi, called Bertone, painted a fresco, the picture that was venerated as Madonna della Ghiara. In 1596 a chapel was built for the fresco due to the rush of the faithful and a deaf and dumb boy who prayed to the Virgin of Ghiara became able to speak. The foundation stone for a large church was laid in 1597, the Basilica della Beata Vergine della Ghiara. Jan Sadeler made a copper engraving after the painting by Lelio Orsi in 1596, which spread the composition of the votive picture. It was taken up by numerous artists in different media and formats, as a painting, relief or sculpture. Several paintings are also attributed to Denys Calvaert. The child and Maria sit facing each other in a rocky landscape. The Blessed Mother folded her hands in adoration. The color is rich, rich, the strong colors cleverly matched. The design of the landscape refers to the Flemish training of the artist.

DIE VERKÜNDIGUNG DES ENGELS AN MARIA Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 57 x 43 cm. In dekorativem Rahmen. Die in einem Innenraum, an einer hölzernen Bank kniende Maria mit rotem Gewand und langem Mantel, überrascht von einem Engel in langem weißen gegürteten Gewand mit großen Flügeln. Der Engel Gabriel teilt ihr mit erhobener rechter Hand mit, dass sie den Sohn Gottes vom Heiligen Geist empfangen und ihn gebären werde. Auf den Stufen hat er einen Zweig einer weißen Lilie abgelegt, sie repräsentiert die Jungfräulichkeit Mariens. Maria selbst hat das Lesen in einem aufgeschlagenen Buch unterbrochen und wendet sich ehrfurchtsvoll, mit gekreuzten Unterarmen über ihrer Brust dem Engel zu. Im oberen Himmelsbereich reißen die weißen Wolken auf und Gottvater ist zu erkennen, die linke Hand zum Segensgestus vorstreckend. In der oberen linken Ecke ist zudem der Heilige Geist, in Gestalt einer weißen Taube auszumachen. Für die Zeit in der Kunst beliebtes Darstellungsthema der Verkündigung, hier in zurückhaltender Farbigkeit. Retuschen.
