Year of the Rat dated 2009 oil on canvas and installation 95 1/2” x 58” (243 cm x 147 cm) PROVENANCE: León Gallery, The Asian Cultural Council Art Auction 2018, March 3, 2018, Lot 117 WRITE UPBuen Calubayan is renowned for his conceptually rich and complex artistic practice. His works delve into the nuances of history, both personal and shared, through primarily process-oriented pieces. In addition to this, he has embarked on a series focusing on popes as subjects, aiming to unravel the influence of Catholicism within the Filipino context, considering the Philippines’ status as one of the world’s most significant Catholic countries. This exploration extends to examining portraiture as a nexus for both power and its perpetuation. Depicting the highest figure in Christendom has a rich historical background, from Raphael’s portrayals of Pope Julius and Leo X to Diego Velasquez’s renowned rendering of Innocent X. Pope Benedict XVI, recognized for his firm doctrinal conservatism and the unusual act of retirement, paving the way for the ascension of the perceived charismatic Pope Francis, is portrayed in a stoic seated position on what seems to be a concrete chair, his gaze piercing through the viewer. The artist deliberately situates the pope apart from the typical trappings and embellishments of his office, with the exception of his vestments signaling his role as the Vicar of Christ. Instead, the artist places him within an impressionistic landscape dominated by brooding, dark clouds that hint at an imminent rainstorm. Calubayan’s portrait exudes an unsettling quality, attributing the depicted figure with an all-observant nature, seemingly capable of scrutinizing the purity of the soul of anyone who gazes upon it. Buen Calubayan (b. 1980) - Lecture on Asking the Right Question With Your Framers

        Est: ₱700,000 - ₱910,000

Buen Calubayan (b. 1980) Lecture on Asking the Right Question With Your Framers dated 2014 oil on canvas 30" x 24" (76 cm x 61 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Blanc Gallery and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Buen Calubayan's artistic endeavor is a masterful interlacing of history, politics, religion, and identity, yielding creations of profound personal resonance yet substantial cultural import. These works boldly challenge the age-old role that aesthetics have played in shaping society and history. In Calubayan's view, the present artistic landscape necessitates a transformative approach—one that embraces interdisciplinarity and intersectionality, aligning with the intrinsic pluralism now defining our global reality. Within the piece at hand, Calubayan sets forth to dismantle conventional perceptions of art, particularly in the context of its presentation. This work transcends mere visual engagement, inviting the viewer into an experiential domain. This metamorphosis is achieved by skillfully fusing a customary tableau with a title that provocatively scrutinizes the established norms governing its exhibition. For Calubayan, this shift signals the call for art to mirror the multi-dimensional essence of existence. This aspiration mandates a harmonious fusion of diverse artistic methodologies, orchestrating a symphony of perspectives into a coherent whole. Calubayan's figurative creation harmoniously melds conventional techniques with surrealist treatments, culminating in an amalgamation that exudes an ineffable essence. This essence, while intimately tied to memory, nostalgia, and history, transcends these individual components. Instead, it serves as a mirror reflecting the intricate tapestry of the contemporary human condition—a resounding echo of the complexities defining our modern world. (Jed Daya)

Buen Calubayan (b. 1980) is a firm believer in the microcosm of one man. Using himself as a cultural detective, traveling inquisitor, and even a Dr. Who– like guru of time, he is determined to ferret out the true nature of the Filipino identity. Drawing from his own family life (as in the Fressie Capulong exhibit, a dissertation on his mother, which took the grand prize at the Ateneo Art Awards 2013), his voracious appetite for all kinds of books (including works by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Friedrich Nietzsche), as well as various voyages to untrammeled Filipino vistas, he has managed to create an ambitious multiexhibit series under the general heading of the (Auto)Bio project, “with himself as subject.” Biography was the self-evident title of his first show on that theme in 2013. Two related “installments” both titled Bionote followed. In Calubayan’s deliberately academic language, this referred to “a shorter profile or summary in reference to the longer version of one’s Biography.” In fact, these were his mementoes of “places and times zoomed in from the bigger picture.” In it were featured ethereal landscapes of Bataan seashores and clouds in the sky somewhere between Australia and Malaysia. The series finally culminated in Biowork, his first solo show at the Ateneo Art Gallery in 2015. Calubayan also simultaneously “problematized his work in reference to the larger narratives of aesthetic histories in the Philippines.” In recent years, that has led him to create visual commentaries on canonical Filipino works, as in the Spoliarium and, more recently, the Hidalgo exhibits. Inescapable, however, is Calubayan’s technical virtuosity, placing him among the most dexterous of the recent generation of Filipino contemporary artists—certainly allowing him to be among its mostvisionary. A Series of Incomplete Landscapes is a mind- bending anatomy of time, layered with as many meanings as possible. One of Calubayan’s pet theories, after all, is that one can tamper with the concepts of the past, present, and future and they may be made to intersect and happen all at once. The pink and gold skies of sunrise, the more somber shades of sunset, and the blue skies of a noonday sun create a stream of different emotions in the same landscape. At the same time, Calubayan creates his classic “convergence of the experiencing-self and the remembering-self.” Have we seen these same dawns and twilights ourselves or chosen to remember someone else’s recollections?, he seems to ask. Calubayan’s style has been described in his catalogs as “reminiscent of the works of the English Romantic landscape artist J. M. W. Turner.” It is an obvious mastery that allows him to weave in and out of our collective memories, leading us into his serious process of questioning our histories and liberating us from the predictable. *(From the essay written by Carlomar Daoana)

Buen Calubayan (b. 1980) Hidalgo's Studio signed and dated 2016 (upper left corner) oil on canvas 24"x 36" (61 cm x 91 cm) EXHIBITED: Blanc Gallery, Hidalgo: Towards a History from Within, Quezon City, June 11 - July 2, 2016 In Hidalgo’s Studio, Buen Calubayan aims to address the position of Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo and to seek the fine artist’s perceived locations in the “world” of art. His exhibit titled Hidalgo: Towards a History from Within explores the “world” that begins when it was first ambushed by significant changes towards the turn of the century. For Calubayan, it formed the coordinates where the possibility of “finding Hidalgo in the world” takes place. In the advent of what would become a major shift in art history, Hidalgo stayed in the safe space of Academism. As an ilustrado from a country that dragged him into its political struggles, primary concerns tend to trump experimentation. Given his achievement-based Catholic upbringing and limited resources, the most he can hope for is validation from his motherland as a painter and nothing beyond that. Furthermore, the strict Academic training did not allow Felix to make mistakes. This is evident in his numerous sketches done before doing the actual work where all errors and trials are mostly eliminated, making his masterpiece almost mechanically rendered. “Lacking its core organic emblem,” as Calubayan noted. Along with time, naturally, the world moves on. Then, in a blink, the economic and artistic evolutions changed the game. And, now, we are prompted to ask ourselves: where is Hidalgo indeed? (P.I.R.)

Clouds Study signed and dated 2016 (upper left) oil on canvas 18" x 24" (46 cm x 61 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Blanc Gallery, Quezon City Buen Calubayan’s artistic practice is one that interweaves history, politics, religion, and identity to create deeply personal yet culturally important pieces that challenge the traditional role of aesthetics in society and history. For Calubayan, art, now more than ever, must take upon an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach given that the reality of the world is now presupposed by an inherent sense of pluralism. In this piece, Calubayan challenges our traditional perception of art. The work suggests that art should go beyond the act of seeing, The creative praxis of contemporary artist Jack Salud espouses pointillist painting. Salud focuses on creating large-scale masterpieces rendered in his intricate employment of delicate specks of paint. Salud entered the art arena in 1996 when he participated in the annual invitational watercolor exhibition/competition ‘Kulay sa Tubig’ (Color on Water). Since then, Salud has participated in numerous exhibitions, the latest being ‘Paint My Dreams’ in 2020, an online fund-raising exhibit for the Rotary Club of Bagong Silangan in Quezon City. The title of this work, Victorious, is encapsulated in the Bible verse Philippians 4:8, which Salud references in the painting’s inscription. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, 146 Jack Salud (b. 1964) Victorious signed and inscribed "Philippians 4:8" (lower left) acrylic on canvas 48" x 32" (122 cm x 81 cm) P 200,000 Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Furthermore, Salud is driven by Henri Matisse’s maxim that says, “Creativity takes courage.” Thus, in discerning this work, Salud invites and encourages the viewer to revel in the inner intimacies of their passions in life. (A.M.) but must also reflect a sense of being. For Calubayan, this means that art must reflect the multifaceted nature of reality by combining different approaches in order to achieve a successful synthesis. Calubyan’s figurative piece combines both traditional techniques with surrealist treatments in order to capture an ineffable sense of memory, nostalgia, and history that effectively reflects the contemporary condition. Buen Calubayan (b. 1989) How to View a Landscape? 2016 pastel on canvas 48” x 48” (122 cm x 122 cm) Calubayan challenges often our traditional perception of art. The work suggests that art should go beyond the act of seeing, but must also reflect a sense of being. For Calubayan, this means that art must reflect the multifaceted nature of reality by combining different approaches in order to achieve a successful synthesis. In this piece titled Instructure on Viewing the Landscape, Calubayan attempts to deconstruct and partially satirize our experiences when viewing one of art’s most time-honored subject matters. The piece is laid out like a diagram, carefully peeling back the layers of the landscape at the center and its defining elements through lines, arrows, and explanatory blurbs. In it, basic and fundamental concepts such as “vanishing point”, “form”, and “horizon” are intermixed with more abstract terms like “philosophy”, “belief system”, and “revolution”. Buen Calubayan is undoubtedly one of the preeminent artists of his generation. Having been declared a recipient of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ esteemed Thirteen Artists Award in 2009 and one of three Winners for Visual Arts in the 2013 Ateneo Art Awards, Calubayan laid his claim over the Philippine art world in less than a decade, landing on Ateneo’s shortlist once more only two years after his first win. The 2012 exhibit Fressie Capulong, for which he won the Ateneo prize, notably marked a shift in Calubayan’s style, tending towards the personal subject as an entry point into exploring larger societal, even national themes.

        La Barca De Aqueronte

        Est: ₱3,200,000 - ₱4,160,000

The original La Barca de Aqueronte (The Boat of Charon) is a metaphor of the struggle between life and death—of the departed desperately seeking peace. It is also a political parable of the Filipino on a tumultuous journey to liberty. La Barca was created by Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo in 1887, in the same year as Jose Rizal finished his magnum opus, Noli Me Tangere. Charon is the ferryman of Hades who carries those who have newly perished across the rivers that divide the world of the living from the world of the dead. Some resist, others eagerly join their last journey from earth. Hidalgo is said to have taken inspiration from a reading of Dante’s Inferno, and there could be no more apt description of the Philippines in the 19th century. In 2016, Buen Calubayan began his landmark project, Hidalgo: Towards a History from Within, which follows the trajectory of the Filipino masters in the so-called Gilded Age. “Hidalgo,” he writes, “occupies the historical line of research that was started in Spoliarium (2013) towards the understanding of a period characterized as ‘the pinnacle of Philippine art.’ Such understanding is crucial in order to counter-illuminate the shadows cast by ‘the greatest Filipino painters.’” He continues, The objective of this project is to problematize the positioning of Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo and to understand his perceived location(s) in a given “world.” This “world” broadly spans from the 19th century where it was ambushed by significant changes towards the turn of the century. These changes form the coordinates where the possibility of “finding Hidalgo in the world” takes place. Calubayan deliberately appropriates the Hidalgo masterpiece with these differences, as noted in his detailed condition report, “Some figures from the original were omitted, particularly Charon and the boat, to give emphasis on the figures and the surrounding darkness.” In a powerful argument for nonobjective art, Calubayan asserts, “We have never left the Academy. Like Felix, we are all timid academic painters, modernists, and conceptualists.” His selection of Hidalgo’s most-awarded and recognized work is critical. The result is a large-scale imposing commentary on our art history and the identities formed by that history. La Barca de Aqueronte is thus one of Calubayan’s most important works from a world-class artist who is unafraid to defy legends. (Lisa Guerrero Nakpil)

This massive installation - consisting mainly of three fine oil on canvas paintings in the atmospheric, semi-abstract style for which Buen Calubayan is best known - explores the complex relationship between viewer and art piece, where the interaction between both becomes part of the work itself. Calubayan, one of the leading artists of his generation and a winner of the Ateneo Art Awards, has built a body of work that delves into themes of landscape, memory, and the archive. In his cerebral articulations, Calubayan integrates the semi-figurative to the purely non-figurative abstract, positioning them into a landscaped timeline that is both meant to guide in as much as it is made to be questioned and transgressed. Calubayan finds strength and, indeed, purpose and meaning in his art, by challenging the angles of convention that lapse into and away from our consciousness. He visualizes this, and in doing so, reminds us of the processes that we undergo to create meaning for both the world we live in as well as our interior selves.
