      GLADYS E.M. CALTHROP (1894-1980) THREE COSTUME DESIGNS FOR THE GAY PAVILION sold with an original Playbill for the production signed l.r. GM Calthrop inscribed extensively with costume notes pencil & watercolour Largest: 55.2 x 37.6cm / 213/4 x 143/4in Provenance: Sir Peter Lauderdale Daubeny, C.B.E. unframed (3) The Gay Pavilion was put on by Peter Daubeny Ltd. (owned by the German-British impressario Sir Peter Lauderdale Daubeny) from the 15th May 1945 to the 2nd of June 1945 in Piccadilly. The play, written by William Lipscomb, was directed by William Armstrong. The stage sets were designed by Colefax and Fowler, and the costumes by Gladys Calthrop. The three designs are all for Act III of the play, set in an ante-room of St James' Palace. One has been identified as being for Frances, Countess of Jersey (played by Margaret Francesca "Peggy" Ramsay) and another is inscribed Duchess of Devonshire, though the character does not appear in the dramatis personae. The third drawing is also of a lady dressed in grand apparel.
