Indistinct signature – B Callow with date 1863? “Callow” scratched into stretcher. Excellent Condition. Painting is unsigned although it is attributed to "John Callow (1822-1878)". OS: 26.5"wide x 18"high. SS: 20.5"wide x 12" high. Provenance: Painting purchased at Sothebys Auction, April 15, 2000 for $660.00 plus shipping and tax from Australia $135.00 = $802.92. Property of a Melbourne, Armadale, Victoria, Australia. Description: English School, 19th Century, Coastal Scene with figure on horseback beside a boat Oil on canvas. 30 x 52cm. Specifications: Good Condition. Circa 1860l Indistinct signature – B Callow with date 1863? “Callow” scratched into stretcher. Painting is unsigned although it is attributed to "John Callow (1822-1878)". Lot offered by Robert Bradlow. Est 600-800. Note: John Callow. English (1822-1878) He was taught by his brother, the artist William Callow. He became a member of the New Watercolor Society, and an associate of the Old Watercolor Society. He was junior professor of drawing at the Royal Military College, Addiscocmbe from 1855 to 1861. According to H. m. Vibart, writing in 1894, Callow “never became a favorite of the cadets, for he was a jaundiced, saturnine character with no good-humor or geniality about him.” He was master of landscape at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, 1861-1865, and professor at Queen’s College, London, 1875-1878. He painted marine subjects and landscapes, mostly in watercolor. He died in 1878 in New Cross, south-east London. His work has been offered at auction on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 1998 the record price for his work at auction is $25,926 USD for Shipping at anchor off the coast, sold at Sotheby’s London in 2006.
